I have been looking at this radio. A classic design, and a good price. I sure would like to try one out! |

Other than the conversion I cannot think of any mods it would need. It will dead key 10 watts out of the box depnding on how it is setup and swings 40+ right out of the box. It can be adjusted to either a 4 watt dead key or 10 watt dead key. With the Ranger Factory 2 Year Warranty I personally would not recommend anyone doing anything to it as it is working GREAT! and needs NO Modifications. If you want to use it with a LOW DRIVE Amplifier then I would highly RECOMMEND having the Copper Tech turn the dead key down to 4 watts. The ONLY modification it would need is the Conversion which if the Copper Tech does it the Factory 2 Year Ranger Warranty is still good. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9CEF |

Captian_radio, The Conversion is not that hard to do yourself, But if you do it then you VOID your Factory 2 Year Limited Warranty. By having the Copper Tech do it your 2 Year Factory Limited Warranty is still 100% intact. Hope this help's, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9CEF CVC#2 |

other than 2 small differences, the freq counter and 6 buttons being on opposite sides and the blue lites, this thing looks a WHOLE LOT like my silver faced vr9000. |

Been doing lots of reading and lots of thinking and lots of extra work for $$$ gathering and oh ya, lots of off forum emailing and extensive questioning to good ol Lon, tech 808 and thank you again, Lon, well with all this done, I ordered my ss158edx on saturday the 28th of july from coppers. This radio was the hardest one to purchess due to time of thinking and remebering the woo's of buying others like my ill faded 45mp galaxy. Well I will have it in a week or so and I will post out come. I hope for the best. Seems I always get bit in the tail on new radio purchesses. I do hope it is different and for the better this time. Id kinda like to have a brand new purchess radio in 25 yrs still in working order. Thank you again, Lon. Richey DX freak/Mad Dog/Puppet Master CEF#885 I can only do the best I can with what I got.

I had to back out of the deal above for certian reasons but I am still wanting this radio and im still going to get it. Here is something I found out on it and want to see if anyone can add to this question and elaburate on it. I have heard that you can replace the factory installed resistor across the LOW Power VR and lower the dead key on these radios. This is tampering with the main board and surly voiding the warrantee if it possible to do. What can anyone say about it and any thoughts. I have heard that doing this can get the dead key as low as 1 watt and swing the rest as high as 40 watts. Have I been lied too? Please inform me, I have the funds now for the purchess of 1 of these. Thanks for any info. DX Richey DX freak/Mad Dog/Puppet Master CEF#885 I can only do the best I can with what I got.
