I have two of the radio shack frs radios with the quiet codes. We also have the base unit in the kitchen. Its basicly looks like a weather monitor with push to talk buttons. It has ptt and vox. Which is great if you are busy with something and the kids are riding bikes up town and they call. I use these units for alot. I take one on walks, the kids take a cheaper unit (due to their droping it constantly.) on their bike rides. But the radio shack units have transmited easily over two miles of "open" ground. When you enter the city area the buldings can cause some distruption of signal. We also take them on shopping trips to the mall. Easy to keep in touch with your children that way. They always hear the call signal and its great to have for safety situation. These are teen age children, not pre teen. But its simple and easy. I enjoy having the ability to keep in touch with family members when on camping trips or even traveling in different vehicles. We have the 11 meter radios but sometimes its nice to have no other people trying to talk back. And since they have relatively short range there are rarely others talking to us. If it happens generally we use the quiet codes and it takes care of it in a hurry. I am very interested in getting GRMS units.
