Review The KLV550 was tested with a Galaxy 949 and the 949's output was a modest 16w peak. For any of you interested I spent a little time with the KLV 550. I was impressed with the output of the pair of Thompson SD1407 28v transistors. These are rated at 100w avg power with 2.5w of avg drive ea. It should easily achieve 200+ from a Bird 43 and 400-600 on the Bird 43p depending on peak drive.
Output Levels using 6 Position Switch | Position | Input | Deadkey | PEP | 1 | 2.5w | 20w | 100w | 2 | 2.5w | 30w | 150w | 3 | 2.5w | 40w | 200w | 4 | 2.5w | 50w | 250w | 5 | 2.5w | 70w | 325w | 6 | 2.5w | 110w | 425w |
| Of course with a radio of higher peaks your peak output will increase. The neat thing is the built in power meter is pretty accurate. Audio checks were "loud and clear". SSB worked just as well as AM with "loud and clear" checks as well, ssb delay was just right. The pre-amp works very well and the adjustability is a dream. You know sometimes you need just a little more gain, not to be blasted away by the pre-amp. This allows you to do just that. Adjust just the amount of pre-amp gain you need to hear what you're after without dragging in all the trash with it. The two cooling fans are on the bottom so make sure the amp sits in a cool place and a hard surface. Periodically check and clean the fan grilles. All in all another great product from RM Italy available to you from Copper Electronics. Enjoy! -Tech671
