Just got a call from Sam Lewis (Magnum International). One of the 1st Pre-Production MAGNUM S-9-175 radios will arrive here in the morning from Chris Holland (Magnum Service Center) by UPS for Testing & doing a Copper Review on it. Just in time to Road Test it on our upcoming Copper Road Trip next week. I will keep everyone UPDATED on the progress. Yeah nice update. Now take a pile of pictures and show us what's the deal. Make sure you write a lengthy review too please. I can't believe it...is it FINALLY gonna show it's face? I hope it's not 8-10 months before they become "production". |

Is the road trip done yet? Holy crapolie...we're chomping at the bit over here. Maybe Lon had so much fun with the S9-175 on the road trip that he decided to never come back? |

As for Pictures the faceplate is exactly the same as the S-9 and S-9-80 with no difference except it will have a 200 watt Round SWR/Watt Meter (which I hate) instead of the 50 watt SWR/Power Meter. As for posting pictures of the pre-prodution radio that I have to test that would be useless as the exterior case (Top & Bottom) will be 100% different on the final production model. I will list as much information as I have on this Pre-Production model. There is still roughly 2 more weeks of testing to be completed. What i should have said was kick it round like a soccer ball. A lap of the Rubicon Trail with the radio sitting on the floor should give some idea of toughness....lol. Bob, The Pre-production S-9-175 went into the oven last night with temp set at 150° at 9PM and will come out this morning at 9AM just in time for the start of the CEF Net's and will be tested on AM/FM/LSB/USB on the CB channel 13/27.115 CEF Net and the CEF 10 Meter Ham net. This simulates it being locked in a parked car for 12 hours when the temp can climb to 150° inside. After the CEF Net's it will go into the freezer for 12 hours to simulate it being in a parked car in the colder climates when the temp can fall to -0- or below. Then it will be on with power 24/7 for the next 2 weeks to see if anything fails ie: SWR/Watt Meter, Control lights & (Nitro Knobs) on this one. It will be tested on the Beams, Imax2000 and Mobile at 5, 10. 15. 20, 25 and 30 miles on 4 different Mobile Antennas and in 3 different vehicles with myself and 808xyl being mobile getting signal and audio reports from: CEF#156, CEF#159, CEF#165, CEF#166, CEF#195, CEF#557. It will also be used as a Base radio today and for the next 2 weeks on the CEF Radio Club Net's. Oh and it WILL get my FAMOUS PAINT SHAKER TEST as well. Dale, That is the main idea of putting it in the freezer. If it is in your car overnite in sub zero conditions collecting moisture then I am quite sure you want to know that it is going to work and not blow up or short out. Penrider, The Paint Shaker simulates mounting radio's in trucks and 4 wheelers that DO NOT have an air ride suspension like Dump Trucks, Farm Equipment, and others. If a radio cannot survive a paint shaker for 20 minutes then it probably will not take being jarred around in vehicles for a year or more. Why do you hate the round meter? I am curious to see what the inside looks like. I do not really care that much of how the outside looks cause I figured it looked just like the rest of the S crowd. I assume this will be available without those nitro knobs cause that is what I hate. I hope that final production has a back-lit faceplate cause that is something that would be real nice for night use. Maybe soon they'll make production and give us all something else to want. Andre |

I do not like round meters because it compresses the control knobs to a smaller space which make's it difficult to use/adjust when driving down the road if you have large fingers as when you try to adjust one control your fin ger are turning another control. You could add 2 more control knobs under a regular meter that is impossible to do with the round meter which would space them out more for easier operation. Yes, it will be avialiable WITH or WITHOUT the NITRO KNOBS. It has the exact same M5878 main board as the other S-9 radios. And the M5878 Amp Board is enclosed in a metal housing atached to the bottom finned heat sink case. Sorry there are no plans for a backlit faceplate that I know of. Bullseye, ALL radios I test get the exact same testing. And Sam almost had a heart attack with the paint shaker and when kid_vicious asked about the heat build up inside a car sitting in the sun in a parking lot in NV or CA with the windows up for 8 hours while working he also gave the OK for the Oven test. If a radio can't pass the test for heat, cold and vibrations then why buy it knowing it could fail on you in a few months of normal everyday use. All of the tests that I do most everyone will encounter in everyday use. Lon ~ Tech808 ~ N9CEF CEF#808 ~ CEF HAM#33 ~ CVC#002 10-10 #61493 ~ 10-10 VP#2688 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

I hadn't thought of the paint shaker that way, sounded a little extreme..but when I think about our local well-maintained roads..aka..low maintenance dirt roads, I guess some vehicles would put a radio through even more than that...and we all know what heat and cold Can do to electronics in general....Thanks Lon, that's a lot of work on your part Sean CEF867 CVC81 "Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to!!"

you got the idea Pat, that's what I meant by "low maintenance"...aka.. our heavily- traveled county roads...then we have our "Level-B maintenance", which means is gets smoothed by the frame of my pickup as I slog through it...even More fun when it dries and the ruts are deeper than tractor tires...either way, Hell on radios and mounts...want a rude shock??...hit a rut and look over and the 2970 that Was mounted to the hump is now Eye-Level!...lol Sean CEF867 CVC81 "Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to!!"

Kid_vicious/Matt, Without you being the one to ask for a test and bringing up a radio sitting in an enclosed car all day long I would have never thought of it so Thank You! for bringing it to my attention. And I will NEVER forget Sam saying you want to do WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then he said SURE go ahead so now I SHAKE, FREEZE and BAKE (Oven Test) EVERY radio I get for a Review no matter what manufacturer makes them. Well 150 degrees probably isn't hot enough to melt even the newer solder but wouldn't it be funny if it did? Sounds like using the oven to re-bake the solder on all those xbox 360's with the red light problems. It is a good idea though and maybe it will show any possible problems like all the cold solder joint problems seen before. You plan on doing those test with or without the unit powered on? |

Chronic, If you read my Review on the MAGNUM S-9 you will find if you want 6 digits on AM/FM all you have to do is remove jumper JP4 which is clearly shown in my Review. I have personally never found any reason to remove it in any of the Magnum radios I have tested using AM/FM. CLICK on the LINK below. Magnum S-9 Mobile Radio Review The case will be a Matt Grey color with MAGNUM on the front of the heat sink fins below the face plate. I should have a picture of the case by the end of this coming week or next week to post for the Copper Forum Members. Hey Lon, Just wondering if you operate the radios while roasting them? Do my S-9 up medium rare ok Lon! All I picture is Lon wearing a chefs' apron and hat BBQing radios! On a serious note, this type of testing is definatley gonna keep the radio builders on their toes. I can hear all the other builders now, "Lon is on the phone sir, he would like a radio sent to him for testing." "Who is on the phone?" "You know, that tech from the Copper Forum named Lon"....... " Hang up the phone now!!!!" click Kenny cef491(27.115lsb) 2sf491(27.555usb) Indiana

Since I do not have the Final Production Top & Bottom Covers on my test radio below are pictures from Chris at the Magnum Factory Service Repair Center. His pictures below show the final production TOP & BOTTOM cases on the radio that are 100% different than on the Pre-production model I am testing and this is why I have not posted any pictures of the unit that I have as Sam requested at Dayton that I not post pictures of a radio that would have no resemblance to the final production product. On the Pre-production MAGNUM S-9-175 that I am testing the UPPER and LOWER cases are CNC machined from solid billet and very sharp. On the FINAL production S-9-175 models that Chris has submitted pictures of the cabinets are manufactured from extruded aluminum and have nice rounded edges and a much better fit / finish. When I was at the Dayton Hamvention last month with Sam in the MAGNUM BOOTH I was able to see a sample of the designed bottom case with the name MAGNUM engraved on it which the pictures below really do not show it justice as it is a sharp looking heat sink.
