Hi, I picked up an old 23-channel Cobra 135 base, and after a good cleaning and lots of de-oxit, everything works great. I'm interested in getting a VFO for this radio, and would appreciate it if someone would let me know what number Siltronix or PAL VFO it uses. (Yep, I know that 23 channel radios are only legal in the CB band if the original owner is using them. I plan on using this radio on 10 meters :-), so no problem there...) Thanks, and have a great week! |

Killowatt ....... Why bother ..... 99% of the "10 meter " VFO's ive seen drift some badly. Making a stable one at 28 mhz is costly. It was common on 6 meters to see matching VFO's back in the AM days ( 50's 60's ) but as soon as SSB took over they were history ..... Most "VFO" tuned radios the VFO was a low frequency oscilator mixed up to 10 or 6 meters this is how collins and ELDICO got thoes classic 40's and 50's early SSB radios to work. Look at the 75A receivers they used a 2 mhz PTO ( VFO ) and converted the bands like 10 meters down to a low frequency so that the radio was stable enough for ssb .... the ELDICO clones used a VFO on the BROADCAST BAND! and mixed it up to 80-10 meters.

Ahhhhh, ok! I've never used one of those VFOs on SSB, and wasn't aware that they were so unstable. Thanks for the info. - you've saved me some disappointment. I guess I'll just use the old Cobra behind one of my TenTec 2 meter transverters as it seems to have a really sensitive receiver. Thanks for the links. too. Interesting stuff. Those 32V2 units are nice - They've already got 11 meters in them from the factory! (Of course 11 meters used to be one of "our" bands... ;-) Have a great day, Bruce, and I hope to hear you on the net this weekend - 73 |

Yep I had a 75A2 built about 1950 and reworked it updating as much as i could. That and my HT-37 was my HF station for about 10 years. Im getting ready to use a HTX-10 with the tenTec 10 to 2 transverter and your right that transveter works very well with a simple SSB rig. |

Wow, I'd love to have your old station! B.T.W., I've been running an HTX-10 with my transverter for over a year. It's been on continuously, and never hiccuped! All of the panel lights have burned out, though, and I'm gonna be giving the poor thing a break and some maintenance, soon. I'll bet you'll really like 2 meter SSB! If you'll be running a beam, aim the thing up toward Florence, Mississippi (EM 42)and give me a shout. I monitor 144.200 MHz most of the time on my loops, and talked to a guy in Orlando, Florida on them just the other day. I've been thinking about ordering a new crystal (1 MHz down from the original)for the transverter so I can use it with a regular CB with a modified clarifier. That way, 144.200 Mhz corresponds with channel 20 - 5 Khz. I've already done this in my truck where I use a Uniden Grant LT as the I.F., and it works like a charm! I've always gotten a kick out of folks on 2 meters SSB when I tell them that I am talking to them on a CB with a transverter - they rarely believe me for some reason.... Again, thanks for the advice on the VFO, and have a great weekend! |
