it is possible. it would be easier to install one MRF455 IMO. of course, i would just say, get a linear, but maybe there are reasons why this is not an option. try doing a google search for "148gtl turbo mod".(it is the same chassis as the grant LT) you will find a company that sells a kit for it, but if you wanted to just do it all yourself; the instructions are uploaded to the files section of "the mod" yah00 group. i have heard others say its not worth all the effort, but who's to say what project you should do but you. right? good luck, matt |

Thx for the feedback. I'm just preparing for the day when big trucks may be searched at weigh stations for non-compliant radio equipment. I'd like to have a plan "B"...you know, a radio that has the certification on the back and "appears" to be compliant. In such a scenario, a linear attached to the radio would be confiscated for sure. I'd like to build the perfect "sleeper" radio based on an old 148 or Grant, and I'd like to see at least 40 watts PEP on an honest meter. |

The welding cable powering the radio would be a tip off for them to check out your radio.

I know you said that tongue-in-cheek, Hollowpoint445, but I've already got that covered. The 10 guage wire that comes straight from my 4 batteries also powers other electronics...hence the need for the big wire. Also, if that DOT/FCC partnership ever emerges (it probably never will, but who knows), those scale masters at the weigh stations will be so oversaturated with the new knowledge they will have to learn just to identify non-type accepted radios and illegal peripherals, I doubt that they will actually be tearing into the guts of radios or hooking them up to meters. It will most likely be a cursory inspection for known paraphernalia. They will have their hands full enough with that alone. And I'll just bet you that they will hate every minute of it. |

What about one of those stinger boards I see on the auction site? Bolts in place of your internal speaker and kicks around 40-50W? Seems pretty stealth to me and a little less hassle. Heck them KL60's look small enough themselves to sneak inside a Grant sized radio! Think either version has one 1446. Just need to think about heat transfer...Keep thinking. Its what keeps this hobby fun! |

I've heard that the stingers produce way too much RFI without somehow incorporating some kind of RF shield like they use in the 6900/6300 F150, 2970 DX, the 95T, and the 4600 Turbo. But maybe the aluminum case on the KL 60 would work as a shield? Or does it need to be steel to be an effective shield? |

Unbelievable: You all won't believe this, but I was in a truckstop a few days ago and what did I see sitting on the shelf...new in box...marked down to half price... A Grant LT for $79.00. The manager said "It just wouldn't sell and the manufacturer wouldn't take it back because they don't make them any more" Even though I wasn't in the market for one, I couldn't pass it up, so I snagged it. Now I guess I have a back-up, lol. |

Hmmm. This is interesting. I checked the dimensions on RM Italy's website and ran the metric to US conversions, and the KL-60 and the KL-203 are both the exact same size: 4.29" x 4.92" x 1.37" Now we're talking. A 2 pill (2 x sd1446) inside of a Grant chassis. I suppose that you could even hook up the on/off switch to the CB/PA and the SSB delay switch to the bright/dim...or whatever. You could also attatch a computer chassis fan to the outside under the speaker holes, but this would kind of negate the whole "stealth" thing. |

now you're thinkin', Im4jc!!! EXPERIMENT EXPERIMENT EXPERIMENT!!! just don't butcher that LT up! i ALWAYS have room for another one ! you can add rf chokes to the power input of amp board as well as at the output of the radio to assist in reduction of rfi. haven't looked at the new rm stingers, but i'm sure there's room for ferrite beads as well as a choke coil or 2. |
