I have been working on a cobra 29 for quite some time now and i finally got it to power up. If i leave it turned on too long the chip on the right side of the board(if you are looking with the knobs facing you) screwed to the wall on the parts side. On the solder side it has 10 pins and is soldered in like a final. This chip gets extremelly hot and starts smokin after too long. Can anyone identify this piece and maybe help me fix the problem? |

Tshelburne5002 This audio chip may have been replaced at one time or another and was perhaps installed without, or without enough heatsink compound. This chip ALWAYS runs HOT anyways. But if it's "smokin", it's definately running far hotter than it should. And if it's running hot enough to smoke, I'm surprised that it's even working at all. If you have the schematic for this radio that will show pinout voltage readings, you should be able to narrow things down rather quickly by checking the voltages on the chip pins and see if they are within tolerance. If not, then it's all going to be touch and go. There are also some componets around this IC that you might want to check out. Especially any of the electrolitic capacitors in the vacinity. Good luck with your project. Jeff, kc0gxz. |
