I saw a mod were you cna put in biggger finals in the old 2950 like MRF 477 finals.. It says that you need to swap 2 of the leads on the legs the B E C are not like the original finals. Has anyone tried this mod and does it work or is it a waste of time??? |

It was originally done to the hr2510 and gets you 60 to 70 watts am/fm out,but requires rebiasing and makes one but kicking radio you can imagine what it does on ssb,a ham did the original mod go ask on open forum with this new information I'm sure it will perk a few ears.Bigbob |

I had that mod done to my 2510 and theres no way it did 65 to 70 watts. mine did about 50 to 60 PEP but it DID however, make the radio run MUCH cooler and it did sound loud on the air!!!! If the bigger final mod will work in the 2950 ill try it in my 2527!!!!! |

Cm3885 You couldn't be more correct. Your wattage figures are far more realistic than what others have claimed. There just isn't enough drive and end results there to make the change worth the bother. Doubling RF power only give you a 1/2 S-Unit increase. In other words, if a given radio produces 45 watts PEP, 90 watts PEP will bring you up only 1/2 S-Unit on the receiving end. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

thats not always true, some radios are set to 3 db per s unit others to 6db and again others are a combination of them both. but i do agree its not worth the expence of these high priced finals to do this mod. i have a 2950 13z board that i rebuilt the tx chain in and used two mrf 497's witch are a tad hotter than the 477's and it did show nice wattage but for the same money spent i could have had a 2970 and had much more power! i did it just to see what one could be taken to if heavy modifications were done. this was not just a swap a final mod. but its totally not worth it. |
