I've read some messages about adding "talkback" to a radio, either by jumping the center of the ext spk jack to the pa spk jack through a 100 ohm resistor, or by jumping the + spkr lead to the top of the audio xfmr with a 100 ohm resistor.

What exactly is "talkback", and why would I want it?

Thanks for helping educate a dummy ;)

Talkback allows you to hear your own voice though the speaker when you talk. It is helpfull when using an echo or a noise toy.
Also, either of the mods will work, some people just have different ways of doing it.
Hope this helps.

Thanx for the reply Skullman!

Then I assume this would also be useful in hearing if you're over/under modulated, if you're squealing, etc.

Well, skippy overmodulation is better judged with a good meter, but you could definitly tell if your radio was sqealing.

Should be the same as the DX 88, but most EPT3600 boards all you do is clip J15 and put a switch between it just incase you want talkback again. Also if you WANT talkback when echo is off clip one side of D80 then add a switch at J15 for on and off.

I have a Cobra 146 GTL. I have tried every thing to get talk back in it. Does any body know how?? I have been told that you can't do much with a 146 GTL because of something in the radio. I know I can't hook up echo, power mics or toys to it. Thanks for the help.

This radio uses the same technique to mute the speaker during transmit as the Galaxy/Connex mobile radios. The diode in this radio is D51, a small glass diode. It should be near the audio power chip. I don't have a picture or parts location diagram that would get you closer than that.

Here is the easiest way to put talkback into any radio. If your radio has a PA jack and a EXT speaker jack, you are in luck. Experiment with resistors until you find one that is lout enough for you. Jump the resistor from the EXT jack to the PA jack. Instant talkback. Most of the time, loud, clear and no squealing.

On Galaxy radios with the squeal, their fix on the site about using the resistor works. It's mostly for low and muffled talkback. If you have a squeal the easiest way to fix it is us a external speaker. And MOVE IT AWAY FROM YOU. Don't sit in close to you where it can pick up the mic. Sometimes turning it away from you works, and sometimes I've opened up the speaker and cut a small piece of towel to cover the speaker itself. You might have to turn up the volume and little more, but the squeal almost always goes away. All my radios I've done this to are peaked and tuned and the limiter clipped. They are all loud and clear.

If you are using a stock type of microphone then open it up. First, find your audio wire coming out of the cord into the mike. Then, cut it and add a 500 ohm up to a 1000 ohm resistor and cover the whole thing with heatshrink tubing. You can also add a .1micro farad ceramic disc capacitor from the audio wire to the shield.
If that don't stop the squeal you might have an SWR problem.

Did you have to remove or clip d-80, if so you might be able to lift one leg of d-80 and solder a resistor between it and the board, not sure what value of resistor, which side of the diode or if it will work, but if you can't find anything else it might be worth a try.
