Do all C bias amps sound awful on SSB? I am presently looking for a good stock amp for SSB operation and my Davemade sounds awful.

no, not all sound awful with ssb. -but- they are dirtier than the class ab. in fact, class c should not be used for am operation either(except inside a radio where there is voltage modulation). class c is for fm and cw.

class c amps are also not -linear- amps. they are just amps. class ab are -linear- amps. class ab or b amps should be the only type of amps used for am operation. for ssb, class ab should be the only type used. class b can cause something called 'crossover distortion' for ssb(about the same as the neg peaks flatlinning in am). it may sound good, but sound and proper operation are two different things.

there are 2 reasons that manufactures make class c amps. 1) is because they are cheaper to make because less parts are needed. 2) the swing ratio is higher because they are not linear.

the class b amps are a 'happy medium' for the guys who like to be 'swing freaks' on am(class c characteristics) but yet still want to be respected on ssb(class ab characteristics). the imd, spurious, harmonic, etc content are all better than class c but not as good as class ab.
