Also, how can you get the clarifier to slide more than it does now? I've never had a radio that had the xmit slide with the recieve. Does this make it harder/easier to tune people in and for them to tune to you? Do the xmit and rec always stay on freq with one another? Would it be better to just make the receive slide more and leave the xmit locked, if that is possible? I'm thinking I'd like to just be able to slide my receive more in addition to having a 10kHz switch for the xmit/rec. Does the clarifier mod affect AM? And concerning channel mods, I've seen the simple conversion where you cut the P5 and P6 lines. Where do you put the switch? Do you use two switches, one for P5 and another for P6? I don't quite understand the chart I've seen on this. How do you use the chart? All those "P's" have me confused! What about the mod I've heard about that requires a kit? Any info appreciated. |

Hi Colt, The best thing you can do is get the video from Copper on this radio.I just finished doing everything that you mentioned on my Texas Ranger TR696F SSB which shares the same basic set up with your radio and also the new Galaxy DX2547.You will need two mini SPST toggle switches one for each of those two wires. You can very easily mount them on the back of the radio. You will need to drill a couple of small holes for them. I ran into the same problem with the printed charts and needed to get the video which walks you through the whole operation and makes it very easy.I don't know if the video for the Galaxy deals with the 10KHZ switch or the clarifier slide but you can ask someone at Copper's about that. I got over 10 KHZ of slide when I did the mod on mine but had to get that info from a online mod site dealing with the new Galaxy CB base. The site is cbworldinformer.com.You have to realign a few things to get the clarifier to evenly slide the way you need to to get the even numbered frequencies and this takes a little time.I used an external freq.counter for the transmit adjustments and the built in counter for the receive when aligning it.It worked out great! Hope this helps you some.Best of luck. |

Thanks for the info, guys! Did the channel mod tonight. Worked great! Was glad to see that the 959's freq counter tracks right along. Strange that Firebreather says a simple channel mod can't be done on the 949/959. This one was about as simple as you could ever want. Granted, it doesn't give you 40 up and 40 down, but if I counted correctly it gives 49 up, 23 down, and one RC. I haven't done any of the other mods on Firebreather's site for the 959. Would appreciate a report from those who have. BTW, tonight after I did the channeling, I noticed that my meter dims on xmit. I've only had the radio three weeks, and it may be possible that it's always done it. I may have been just paying more attention to the subtleties of the radio's behavior since I'd just had the cover off. I've had radios in the past do this, so if this one was doing it all along, this may be why I did't notice. The channeling is the only mod that has been done. It hasn't even been peaked, so the current draw should be no more than it would be out of the box. Does it make any sense that the channeling could cause it? Doesn't make sense to me, as I don't see any way those two switches could cause a noticable voltage drop. I don't much care so long as my talk power isn't affected. It just seems strange. Again, maybe it's always done it, I don't know. What do you fellers say? |

You can email 307 and he'll give all the details, plus a channel chart. Since he didn't actually post the method, I'll assume he didn't want it posted. I don't know how to do a 10khz shift. I asked 307 about it and he just said that it's hard to do. |

The mods were always possible on the 959 , Alot of people say it is not possible , I did the tape showing it is! 10K is simple. Add 300 pF in series with the 10.240 reference crystal.. 307 |

Has anyone done the 10 KHZ jump switch mod on a DX959 or other radio with the same board?I don't have a schematic for my TR696F SSB and I'm not sure where the mentioned components are.I know how to hook up the switch. |

That's cool! Sure is a cheap way to pick up a bunch of channels, huh? BTW, if you have heard about the so-called "viagra board" for the 959, I've heard it's been discontinued. Compared to the P5/P6 job, it's a hassle anyway! Glad it worked out good for ya! |

DX-959 Channel Modification 1) On the back of the channel selector switch, locate the wires marked P5 and P6. 2) Cut these wires and place SPST switches in-line with them. Power Tweek 1) Change Q47 and Q48 to a 2SC2312. 2) Change D91 to a 1N4148 diode. 3) Change C209 to a 390 pf . (50 volts, mica) 4) Change C212 to 104 uf ceramic cap. (50 volts) 5) Change R242 to 22 ohms. 6) Change R243 to 150 ohms. (1/2 watt) 7) Make sure L34 is a 22 uh coated choke. You may remove R276 for increase in AM modulation, but be careful it doesn't garble on SSB. Unlocking the Clarifier 1) Remove R113. 2) Remove D38 and place a jumper in its spot. 3) Remove D68. 4) Solder a wire from J9, Pin F1 to J14, pin marked "+8V". VR1 AM S-Meter VR2 SSB S-Meter VR3 SSB Squelch VR4 AM Squelch VR6 SSB Carrier Balance VR7 TX Offset VR9 RF Meter VR10 Final Bias VR12 Driver Bias VR13 SSB ALC VR14 AM High Power VR15 AM Modulation Meter VR16 AM Modulation VR17 SSB Power VR18 AM Low Power VC1 10.240 |

Thanks Sonoma & Kevster for the help !!! Is This Correct? Found this on a site..... Simple Unlock the Fine Tune control. 1. Remove JP195 2. Remove JP196 3. Place wire from J14 pin +8V to J9 pin F1 Is this correct? Kevster has something totally different. I tried this before I came here to read any comments and all it did was the L.E.D. stayed on the same #'s. Now when I transmit or recieve...it's garbled(like your mouth is way up against the mic??? When you un-lock it, doesn't it open up the LED's to all different #'s Thanks......Gambler (Dennis) |

Did the "Bills 2 way Mod and found that I lost USB band. It went to the 25.229 Mc band with differant mult. freq. changes. Got only a 3 spread on the fine tune. Seems to be a little unstable to me. Am going to do the other removing parts from the board and trying that. Scooter |

I found out what I did wrong on this mod. I cut the original connections to J9 & J14. The jumper they call out from J14 to J9 is in addition to the connections that are already in place. I put the connections back to their original state and jumpered the black and blue wire together and Presto! The mod worked like a charm. I am finally on frequency on side band and transmit tracks with receive. In addition there is no drift at all on frequency. Success!!! |

Does the simple channel mod give you 27.465 anywhere in the bands? I looked at the map on one site and 27.465 was not listed. If not does anyone know of a way other then the "Viagra" to get that freq. Will any of the other RCI-8719 mods work? |
