Hello i have the Yaesu FT-857D and like to add
a outboard s/rf meter i have a old meter i can
put in a little box but like to get some input on
how to do this.

Look for the FTMETER by LDG and hooks right to the FT-857 and FT-897. It is pretty neat and it is a big analog meter.

The 857d is all the radio you will ever need. You are on the right track. Stay on it and save yourself tons of money. Get the best antennas you can buy.

As znut said, the ldg is available (I think it's about $50), but there are also plans for a homebrew version floating around the net. Not too dificult.

forgot to mention that there is a jack on the head that is specifically there to attach an outboard meter, so if you find the plans I mentioned above, that is where it would plug in. No need to hack inside the radio at all! That's also where the LDG plugs in.
