400 is 4 x 2sc2290, so about 320PEP, with an 80 watt AM carrier. the 500 is 4 x 2sc2879, about 480 PEP with 120 AM carrier. you can probably go 100-120 carrier on the 400 & 150-180 on the 500 and still be safe. just watch for heat. PEP can be a bit lower or higher. the 500V will handle about 10 watts carrier & 40 watts PEP input, the 400 about 8 carrier & 30 PEP input. best way to do it though is to apply input carrier til you see the output carrier you want. the 500 will be fine in your truck, you may see some headlight dimming in SSB though, just lower mic gain til it lessens. |

I would say the 500V. Not that more expensive, and you can always run it lower like a 400V, but at least it won't be full blast when doing that. What kind of radio will you be using? |
