Setting up my mobile and am wondering something. I currently own a Magna Force 350 that does between 350-400 (on a Bird 73 I won't say whose) that a friend wants desperately. My question is how much bigger would I have to go to see a definitive gain in TX over the 350? I don't think anything under a Texas Star 1200 or similiar amp will show me much and I don't have that kind of money but I may be wrong and possibly a TS 500 or 667 will give me a noticable gain. Can anyone tell me if it would be worth upgrading or would I have to buy a much bigger amp to make a difference? Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

well imho i think youd see more watts with the texas star 500 and667 but what kinda radio would you be hooking up to it?cause the 667 has a driver in the amp.id say probaly no more than 25-30watts pep. the 500 will handle around 40-50 no driver.output between these 2 wouldnt notuice on the other end dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

Wattage jumps would be: 16 watts 64 watts 256 watts 1024 watts 4096 watts. I would keep the Magna 350, and maybe purchase a custom made 5 pill amp (Not a texas star 667)that would put out 256-300 watts RMS, and peak at around 800- 900 watts. Any amp that peaks 400-500 watts would be enough to reach DX land consistantly (Unless you're on the superbowl 6 channel) That's my take. Wolverine. |

to stay with SSB biased magnaforce, you'd need to go mf600(4x2879) or mf900(2-2290 x 4-2879). that will double your output, & get you about another 1/2 S-unit of signal strength. you WILL need to upgrade power cables, & possibly EVERYTHING else, from antenna to coax to batteries to alternator. the mf900 works with a 4 watt radio, the 600 needs a driver or a radio with a few more watts. |

Thanks Guys. I kinda figured that upgrading would be more trouble and expense than it was worth.By the way I'll be driving the Magna with my Magnum S-9 when I save up the money to get it ordered. Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

you have to increase your power output by 4 for the person youre talking to,to see 1 extra s unit on their recieve meter from your transmission . so if you got 350 now you need 1400 to bump your signal up a hair and about 6000 watts to get 2 hairs .yea....... i didnt like learning that either . a 5 or 6 pill is a waste of your money . once you get past a few hundred watts its time to go big or go home to make a real difference .and you dont need hundreds or even one hundred watts to talk skip . skip is achieved by atmospheric conditions.......not gobs of power . |
