I'm considering a new radio and thinking about the ones below. Each has pros and cons and none are exactly what I want. I'm interested in LOUD AM audio, which will be the primary use of the radio, with not so frequent use of SSB. It will be matched with a TS DX500HDV and an Astatic 575M6. Is there any other radio I didn't list that I should consider instead of these? Please don’t just tell me they are all great radios. I already know this. I want to know which one stands out in crowd, why you say it does, and which one will take extreme mods well. What about the NPC or PPE mods on these? Can the finals be volted on all these radios? Why or why not? Where can I find “a radio professional that knows what he’s doing” to make an MPC or PPE mod the new radio or can I order it like this? Thanks in advance for your comments and help with my tough decision.

Galaxy 99V ~~~ (Like the features and toys - good AM - not so great SSB?)
Galaxy 93T ~~~ (LOUD AM??? Can second final be added? Will single final match well with a TS DX500HDV?)
Magnum S-9 ~~~ (My DeltaForce has poor squelch control. Same on these?)
General Lee ~~~ (No SSB but great loud AM right? Match well with TS DX500HDV?)
Connex ~~~ (General Lee is upgrade right so why pick one of these?)
Galaxy 959 ~~~ (Needs echo mod – work well with amp?)
Cobra 148 ~~~ (Needs mods – work well with amp?)

look to the left of the forum page under Utilities and Search...do a search for each of those radios, you will find Hundreds of comments/complaints and even technical reviews of each of those radios...a lot of reading, but a lot of good information...it's worth it

as far as finding a good tech, unless someone here in the forum is from your general area you'll just have to go by word of mouth on who does radio work locally

See if you get a test drive of a Connex 300. Won't need an amp, only AM/FM, and at 300 whiskies it's gotta be loud.

I still love my Magnum S9. And no, the squelch isn't poor. Just my 2 cents for you.

'kid, a few good choices here, a few not so good & a couple you may have overlooked. i do not care for galaxy or AM-only radios, so no recommendations from me on those. if you are not looking to operate 'far out of band' (illegal, but....), the cobra 148 may not be a bad choice, & not gonna drain the bank either. if you read the thread 'I want my radio to have variable DK, but same peaks' in the same area your thread here is on, you'll get a few easy but effective mods for the cobra 148. ANY grant XL mods work on this radio(they're the same radio). while the newer 'china-built' 148's have been given a bad reputation, i have found NOTHING to be wrong with them. cost cutting production issues do not affect performance in any way. if you search this forum, you'll find all kinds of other receive & xmit mods for it. if you ask nicely, kid vicious or me may be able to supply some of that info in trade for a nice shiny 2007 corvette, . you will love everything about it, especially with properly chosen mods-xmit audio quality AM or SSB is 2nd to none, rcv is just as awesome, & you can improve overall rcv, noise blanking capabilities, etc. if you have, or can get a (discontinued) 575m6-GO FOR IT! will work great! an astatic road devil is also an EXCELLENT choice! the only change in your plans would require a texas star dx667v rather then the 500 with this radio. performance & overall output will be exactly the same!
i also own both an S9 & a delta force, and do not feel either would be a bad choice. the delta works better with a stock mic then a power mic, both radios have different ausio 'tone' to them, but i LOVE 'em! the ts 500hdv is a great choice for both. i don't care for toys-beeps, echo or talkbacks, which these have (while the 148 doesn't), but, freq-coverage-wise, they have more then enough channels to get yourself in trouble on. i don't go 'out-of-band' much, & not all that far when i do, so MANY export radios are overkill in that respect. but, the S9 is definitely a PERFORMER!
the choice you didn't bring up is the rci6900(25 or 150 watt model) which i believe are still available, and, the same radio at a much cheaper cost, the superstar 158. i've never used the 158, but have used it(discontinued) brothers, the cobra 148fgtldx & connex 4800dxl. AWESOME. probably everything you want, need & could ever use. will work PERFECTLY with the 575m6 & dx500hdv. the 6900f-25 is the same radio as well, but nearly $100 more expensive.
in my mobile, 99.9% of the time i use a well modified & heavily amplified grant XL(same radio as cobra 148), my base has at least 6 radios hooked up at all times, & my S9 & delta force are NEVER removed from the switchbox. after much thought & careful consideration when testing the 148fgtldx & rci690f & connex 4800dxl for an new addition to my shack, i chose the new & unproven S9 & have not been dissatisfied....though i am still thinking about adding a 6900ftb-150 and/or an SS158 to my collection.
my suggestions, in no particular order, would be:
S9
superstar 158
cobra 148
as for galaxy....NO GALAXY RADIOS ALLOWED HERE!!!

If you just want AM that Gen Lee would be a great match. Pretty much the same radio as Connex 3300 hp. Mine with a 5 watt DK for my Magna Force 350 will swing to about 40 watts. Very loud even with stock Mic. That 93T has 1 2290 so 1 pill will get you 70 watts or so pep.
