Yesterday I was playing on 30.840 and 31.00 so I was keying up for a long time I realized my SWR is probably way off on these freqs. so I stopped before I damaged my radio.
So anyway today on my way to class I was trying to talk to some truck drivers I heard about 15 miles away and every time I keyed my radio it sounds like wind or like I'm blowing into the mic. Sometimes it stops and I get through to people but when I comes back you can barley hear my voice and it hardly swings on my built in output meter. The recieve is perfectly fine and I put the stock mic on it and you the wind sound still comes through every time I key(I have my talk back turned on so I can hear what I sound like).
Do you guys think its my radio or maybe something weird with my antenna because we've had a huge storm with tons of rain and I had my whip out of my mount so maybe water got in there? I hope I didnt break my radio already!! |

Update, I took my antenna off and there was no water in it and I found my "sweet spot" on the roof with only 1 bar of SWR on channel 1-6 and above that(7-40) there is no SWR bars at all with the power all the way down and up its the same.
So I was talking up a storm with my perfectly tuned antenna and all of the sudden I started hearing that wind noise in my talkback again. So now I know its not the antenna, mic, and cable. Its gotta be my radio, so I opened it up and looked at the "pills" and resistors and all the internals to see if something got burned up yesterday but its all intact.
This brings me to my question. Is there a chance that when my radio starts getting hot it makes this noise? I havent been able to get anyone for a radio check when the noise is present to ask if they can hear the "wind" noise. Maybe its only coming through my talk back and doesnt effect my transmit, although I cant get ahold of anyone which leads be to believe it IS effecting the transmit quality.
Oh yea for all you who are familiar with the 2970dx, you know when you key up and it gives you like 4-5 bars and then swings all the way to like 8-9 when you talk. Well when I key it automatically almost swings all the way to 8 bars because the wind noise comes through my speaker just as loud as my voice. The only thing that has been consistant is that I have these issues when Ive been on the radio for about 20 min.
Any suggestions? How about filling it with black powder and holding the key down till I see fireworks, the new Magnum is almost out anyway haha. |

There is an old saying, "You pay for your play." It sounds like you might be paying. I hope you have learned your lesson and do not try this again. Also, I believe they are called transistors and not "pills" in your 2970-DX.

Nothing wrong with having a little fun regardless of rules or whatever. But it does stink that you've probably messed up your radio. A common problem I've seen after transmitting on a frequency where your antenna isn't tuned to for good SWR is the capacitors on the amp being messed up. Start by checking those. The ones that run to the emitter side of the "pills". This is probably the source of your "wind" and probably a growling sound that you might be hearing on transmit too.
Another note would be you trusting that built-in SWR function of that radio. I hope this is not how you are actually tuning your antenna dude. If you are the first thing you need to do is invest in a good meter for checking SWR. I would suggest getting one that reads reflected power and forget the SWR function all together. After all that is what you are trying to reduce, reflected watts.
Unless you have a way to check those capacitors I guess you'll have to shot-gun your radio man. Start by replacing those caps and let us know if it gets better.

Yea I learned my lesson!
Whats the difference between transistors and "pills" ? I tought they were called pills because they resemble pills (small,round, and white). I saw my radio has 2 sd 1446's and they look like pills. I'm curious |

There is no difference. Die-hard CB'ers call them Pills and the others call them by their correct name Transistors. There is no difference at all. It's like me calling something a do-hickie and you calling it a thing-a-majig. |

Yo Dale, the radio reads correct with the bars down when I turn the gain down and bars at a higher level when I dead key and they swing all the way up when I talk. The mic I use is a Astatic 636 and I put the stock mic on to make sure my 636 wasn't broken but the "wind" sound came through with both mics plugged in.
Its funny I was just talking to a few guys for atleast an hour and my radio was working great,I giving their meteres full pounds and coming in crystal clear at 10 miles away.I might just sell it on ebay because its giving me a head ache and just get a low powered radio like a 257, cobra 29, etc. And buy a nice 4 pill amp. Atleast it will out perform my current setup and I can run the power I want (500-900 watts)
Any suggestions on a new setup that will give me the most power possible with a stock alternator. I'll keep my Wilson 5000 but thats it. Pretty much I'm asking what size (power in watts) radio should I get to drive a 4 pill amp(2sc2879) properly with out over or under powering it. I would be open to a straight up CB non 10 meter and get a 1 or 2 pill driving 4 pills amp. I would like the radio to work great on an amp right out of the box with out taking it to a tech to adjust the power. Thanks guys |

Have you actually checked to see if the noise is
just coming through on talk back or if you are
actually transmitting the noise? If it's just
coming through the TB, I'd say either get the TB
circuit fixed or disable it. I kind of
doubt you damaged the radio by transmitting in
a bad spot for a short period of time.... so this
problem is probably coincidental.

If u have another radio, listen on the other radio with no antenna hooked to it or put a dummy load on it. then listen to the audio. if u hear the noise then turn the talkback off and see if it goes away. tony/n5jva/cef 259 |
