Has anyone seen or heard of the receive RF mod to the 2SC2999 transistor on the Ranger TR-696 Freedom One radio??!! If anyone does know, which transistor is the one to change?? Thanks in advance for any and all input to my question. Carl CEF-357 CVC-9 HAM-28 Flatlands of Oklahoma

the 696fd1 is only SLIGHTLY different-if that-from the cobra 148f-gtl, which is the same as your grant xl. it's in the same spot as your XL's, carl! i think it's tr14, a 2sc1674. can't get to my schematics right now, but if you have 1 for the radio, just follow off the antenna connector to the rcv part of the radio. |

Another question, why can't the Freedom One and like radios accept the same channel mods as the original 148-GTL and like radios, and not the P5 and P6 mod??? Carl CEF-357 CVC-9 HAM-28 Flatlands of Oklahoma

The newer Galaxy(CB)/Texas Ranger radios use the RCI-8719 pll, which had to be altered to get FCC approval, so that is why the modification is different from the older MB8719 pll chips. As far as the receive mod you asked about, that transistor, along with a few Schottky diodes, does make a difference in the receiver of the radio. It mostly helps to reduce the white noise levels in your radio, which allows you to hear weker stations better. There was another post about this mod, and there are people on the internet that have the package for about $10, if you can't find the components locally. Paul 2IR473 CEF-218 CDX8412

OK guys,we're back to the drawing board on the Ranger Freedom One. Q-14 is not a 2SC1674 it's a 2SC945. Upon installing a 2SC2999 in the Q-14 slot, it shut down the receive. I put the 2SC945 back in circuit at Q-14 and everything is OK. Any ideas as to where we go from here on the 2SC2999 receive upgrade?? Again, thanks for any input on the question.

hey yankee, try that 2sc2999 in q-17, that is the rx amp. super receive mod, replace d30 and d31 with ecg 583 schottky diodes. find d9 and lift "banded end" of diode. add a 1.5k ohm resistor in series with d9. the d9 mod will really pick up the receive. if you do that mod, make sure close stations dont overload the front end of your radio. steve |
