I have a SBE Console II that I just came up with extra crystals for, to let me go up past channel 23..My question is...How would I go about constructing/installing a board and switch so I wouldn't have to switch them out everytime I want to go above channel 23?? Meaning having 40 channels at my fingertips..Does anybody make one? Any sites to check out?? Thanks |

Years ago I did a channel expo mod on an old 23 channel radio. What I did was find the crystal that controlled channels 1 to 4 , I removed this crystal and inserted 2 pieces of wire into the crystal socket, I then found a rotary switch and soldered the 2 wires onto the switch as well as the extra crystals needed to get me where I wanted to go.Sounds very crude but it worked just fine for me. P.S. This was long before radios came out with 40 channels. Bob CEF451 Robert L. Spicer

back in the 70's we'd do the same thing, bob. sometimes it worked fine, sometimes it wouldn't work at all. that's why the expander-type kits were invented, it contained proper wire lengths, capacitance & other magic to make the added crystals think they were soldered up right where they belonged inside the radio, & not attached to a foot of wire. |
