I have a 2970dx-150 problem thats driving me nuts. I can set the channel/frequency and have a QSO, turn it off, and when I turn it on I get a blank display or it shows 24.0000mhz. If I get the blank display and turn the on/off knob a few times, it will show 24.0000mhz or 24.8something or other. I then have to reset the frequencies with the shift button to get my desired frequency set and use the knob/or up and down buttons the mic to change within the band. If I turn it off and turn it on the next day or few hours later I have to go thru the same thing. Its my understanding this unit does NOT have a battery like the old units. Is this true? Could it be a memory capacitor? How about the knob itself? I've had 2950's and 2970's in the past and it was the battery usually or the turnscrews going in too far or something like that. This animal is new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point. |

If the power to the radio is turned off to the radio before the off control on the radio is turned off such as if being used on a 12 volt power supply on a base station and turning off the power supply before switching the off knob on the radio it bleeds the power slowly out of the radio and these radios will show a blank display when turned back on again. If used on a mobile make sure the radio is hooked directly to the battery or other contant power source and the radio has power to it at all times even when radio is turned off. If power to the radio is removed before the radio is turned off and you get a blank display turning the radio off and back on again should restore the display. This is a characteristic of the 2950DX and 2970DX radios. These radios use a capacitor for memory backup. Hope this helps. |

The radio is wired directly to my battery on my truck. I am wondering if it is a bad knob or capacitor? |

Kabar is correct. The same thing happens to my 2970DX. If I turn off the power source to the radio before turning off the radio itself, then many times it will lose it's memory. It doesn't do it every time, but most of the time. You just have to remember to turn off the radio before shutting down the power source i.e;, power supply, ignition switch, etc. |

Brought it to a shop and they looked at the radio, put it on the bench and predictably it acted perfect with no problems at all (about 2 hours of turning on and off and warming up). We then went out and looked at my set up. He said these DX models are sensitive to power changes and wanted to see the power cables. Sure enough, there was some corrosion at my positive terminal which he suggested cleaning up. I got home, cut off the old terminal and cleaned up the post and hardware, put on a better terminal and now I have not had a problem since!!!! Makes sense because it doesn't have a battery inside to store memories. What to learn??? KEEP YOUR TERMINALS CLEAN!!! |
