I have a Connex 3300 that transmits fine, but the receive is barely there. Only way to hear is to turn the volume all the way up. I've hooked it up to an external speaker but still the same thing. I mean it's REALLY quiet, like just barely there.

might the front end transistors have been blown by a powerful transmitter too close to your radio?

if a guy with a texas star DX1600 keys up right next to your truck for a minute or two; there is a good chance that this has happened.
not an expensive repair but you need to have a tech diagnose and fix it.

how did you notice the problem?
did you buy it like that?
did it just "happen" one day?
best of luck with it,
matt

The radio was my car when it got totaled about 6 years ago. I managed to get the radio working, but then haven't used it again until a few months ago. I hooked up a base antenna and ran the radio fine for about a week, and then all of a sudden, no audio.

boy i wish i could help more, but those are the kinds of problems best given to a tech that can run the needed tests on the radio.

sometimes they are simple. sometimes they are not.
if the suggestions i make are not it; then you'll have to find a tech to fix it.
when finding one, ask if they will also do an "alignment" on the radio. use that term.

if they use the terms "peak and tune" or "whackpack" or whatever in their response; hang up the phone.
most guys who call themselves techs these days dont actually fix radios, they just mod them.
not the same thing.

first, try another mic that is correctly wired for your radio.
a broken wire near the mic or the plug is a very common problem, and will cut out your receive.
try wiggling the mic connector, or the cord right at the base of the mic, does the audio come and go?
if so, you may be able to fix this yourself with just a soldering iron and some patience.

if you have an ohmmeter, here is how to test to see if it is actually the mic that is the problem.
turn radio off, unplug from power source.
unplug mic from radio.
set ohmmeter to read continuity.
take off bottom (speaker side) cover of radio.
touch one lead to one of the metal tuning cans on the PC board. (not the metal of the chassis)
touch the other lead to each mic pin on the radio until you find the one that reads continuity.
that is your ground pin.
now, put cover back on, turn radio on, mic unplugged, touch a piece of wire to the ground pin and the other end to each of the others, one at a time.
one should cause the radio to transmit a deadkey.
one should cause the receive audio to be audible.
(dont forget to have a speaker hooked up!)
one might cause a loud squeal that will scare the crud out of you.LOL

if none of the pins cause you to hear the receive audio, then you have a bigger problem that needs a tech.

if you do hear audio on one of the pins:
take off the mic connector and make a note of what color wire goes to which pin.
unsolder the connector from the cord, and cut off about 4-6" of cord.
strip and tin the end just like it was before, slide the collar on, and solder the plug back on.

could also just be a bad speaker or broken connection to the internal speaker.
check closely.

best of luck,
matt

Tried an external speaker, and sounds the same as the internal one. Also tried another microphone, first thing I thought, and still the same problem.

I read somewhere that sometimes the audio chip goes out on these radios. I'm not a tech, so I'm not gonna attempt to try to fix it. Probably just gonna sell it and get something else. Just thought there might be a quick fix.

Thanks.
