I just aquired this radio an it has some issues. When you hook a mic up to it an key up everything goes blank. It almost shuts itself down but it is still lit up but you lose all display an everything. I thought it was wired wrong so I undid the mic end an touched 3 an 5, with 3 bein TX an 5 bein Ground. Does the same thing an NO pin 6 was NEVER touched or crossed! I thought maybe the microprocessor is bad or sumthin. Any info would GREATLY be appreciated!

ok i hooked it up to 12v PS an still does the same thing...grrrrrrr...now I thinkin it is in the TX circuit. Not for sure. Any info would greatly be appreciated!

Sounds as if someone has already used a mike wired for a much more-common RCI-2950 type radio.
Same socket, totally different pinout. Using a mike wired for an RCI radio reveals a built-in "suicide" mode by connecting the wrong two pins together.
What usually happens is that 12 Volts that feeds out one pin in that mike socket gets fed into the 5-Volt computer chip that runs the display and frequency controls. Blows out the chip first time you key it, or so I'm told.
If you are the first owner, and removed it from the sealed factory packaging, and used ONLY the correctly-wired mike, then maybe this isn't your problem. But if you are the second owner, it sounds as if the first owner already blew it out for you.
I have never seen one of these that worked. Someone has already blown out the CPU in the display by the time I see one.
And nobody has stepped up to the plate and offered to sell the parts needed to repair this breakdown.

Sounds like the pin on the mic jack carrying positive voltage got shorted and cooked the KT3176 IC near front of radio.Removing it will make radio usable. |
