what makes the D104's so different between the tug-8,tug-9,silver eagle, knight eagle. why does one sound better than the other on the same radio. like a knight eagle sounds sooooooo much better on my cobra 2000gtl than a tug-9.

If you go to this web site you can see the different schematics for the different D-104's.

What would make a d-104 tug 9 squeel when you first key up on side band and squeel all the time
on am.

To much output from the microphone amplifier, for the radio's audio circuit to handle.
Try this, on the bottom of the microphone, the white wire coming from the microphone cord, lift that white wire from the terminal strip and solder a 4.7 K ohm resistor (yellow,Purple, red) 1/4 watt, to where you lifted the white wire and the white wire to the other side of the resistor, and this might solve your squealing problem. This is an old trick that has solved a good many squealing problems. If this is of no help and your radio doesn't have a microphone gain control to turn down. You might have a technical repair problem with your radio.
Good luck
