I am trying to replace the channel display on my Cobra 146GTL and have the front board exposed. The LED Channel display looks like it is pluged into a blue scoket. But the display will not come out. I have gently tried to pry it out out this scoked as much as I can without feeling like somthing is about to break. The radio was manufactured in June of 1991. What am I doing wrong?

you are probably not doing anything wrong. it is just stuck in there really good from being in there for years and years in different temperature environments. you are correct not to try and pry too hard, as you will probably damage something else before the diplay pops loose. here is what i would do: 1. see that yellow glue that is holding the blue socket in place? using an Xacto knife or a razor knife; CAREFULLY cut it away from the socket completely. pick at it with the razor blade. eventually it will come off. 2. get a roll of solder braid, and using it; remove the solder from the back of the blue socket. make sure you remove all the solder, and do it in steps to minimize heat damage. 3. once all the solder is removed; the socket should come off pretty easily. dont force anything. check for small ammounts of solder holding it in. 4. now that the whole thing is off, you can gently wiggle off the blue sockets by grasping them with your thumb and finger, and working them back and forth. if nothing else; maybe you can mount the new channel display directly to the board. good luck, matt |

I just replaced two red displays for blue units on the 146. Just use a 1/4" thin blade screwdriver, insert between the red display and blue/black socket and twist. Makes cracking sounds because of being in socket for years, but the red display will pop out. The blue/black socket is soldered to the brown board, at least on the two 146's I worked on. |
