why do people run modulators and hd amps if you need to back down the modulator so not to over drive the amp. just confusing my little 2 watt brain |

Modulator is an old style term to describe 1 or 2 pill amplifiers with the 1446, 454, and 455 pills. Others might use the term "Driver" (Small amp to run a bigger amp). Backing down on the radio's RF power will give the amp being used, headroom to swing forward, resulting in louder modulation. I'd rather lower my deadkey into my amp, so that my modulation is loud and proud, and not pinched and muffled, a lower deadkey will also prolong the life the the amp and internal transitors (Pills), because the amp won't be running excessively hot, your choice. Modulator..... Well thats a new one back in the old days it was a audio amp used to modulate a AM transmiter by inposing audio on the plate and screen voltages of the final amp. But heck just like many other things i guess im behind the times ....... |

The set-up I'm talking about is a Cobra 29 into a Texas star mod-v into a texas star 500 HD.Very loud and clear, just a little fuzzy with-in eye sight. I can set in my driveway and listen to this guy all the way to the mill and back. The mill is 20 miles from my house |

Texas star 500 is a mass produced amp (Assembly line), which can get hot even using a dual final radio. I would just use the cobra with a max of a 4 watt dead key, you should get 400-500 watts, depending or not if your radio has a swing kit installed. If you must use your modulator, consider getting a competition amp (Hand built),like Magna-force, X-force, etc. Those amps can take the drive of your modulator, give you better numbers, and those amps are fan-cooled- no worries about the amps running to hot.
