Hi, I have a Silver Eagle that's acting up on me. Whenever I key up I get no audio at all. If I key up and whistle into the MIC I start getting audio. I can continue to talk into the MIC and have audio. As soon as I let off the key and try to key up again, it does the same thing. I have to whistle into the mic to get it to work. Is this a bad head? I have not tried changing the 9 volt, but I have only had the MIC about 2 month's and I put a brand new battery in it when I first got it. I don't mind changing it however . As far as the contact cleaner. I don't have any. What could I use for contact cleaner? Anything I can pick up locally at a hardware store? Rob CEF# 830 Portland, TN

I couldn’t wait so I went and got some contact cleaner. Still the same issue. I key up and I just get a silent dead key. If I talk it doesn’t do anything. If I whistle, it starts working and will work as long as I have it keyed up. Unkey and I get the same problem. Any clues? I just put a new battery in it, and all the soldiering/wiring looks good. Anyone thing it's the MIC element? Rob CEF# 830 Portland, TN

Maybe someone else can shine a light on this? I have not had any trouble out of mind but I know this don't help you any. I was really hopeing you just had a bad battery as even tho some of us might think we are placing a new battery it just might not be all that new as we think,You have to ask yourself the question "How long has this battery been hanging off the rack?" Anyways I hope someone can put the right answer for you and get it back to life for you. Good Luck. PS if you fine the couse please post it here for the rest of us that have a D-104 SE Thanks STARFACE KI4NBE CEF476 HAM181 CVC014

I'll gladly post it if I figure it out. I'll be monitoring this looking for answers as well as heading to a couple of local CB shops to ask if they have heard of the problem. I'm looking for a head to borrow from one of my buddies, so we'll see if it is the head, but I have yet to meet up with him. Rob CEF# 830 Portland, TN

Quite honestly sounds more like a radio problem to me. I suppose you have tried a different mic on the rig? I don't think it would be the element and I'd look more towards the amplifier board if the mic was found to be the problem. Easy to test the head as you know so there's no reason not to. Let us know what you find! Hank~CEF559 Long Island NY

WOOHOO! Tried a known good head and it works! Thanks for all the help guys. Now I guess it's time to buy a new element for about $15 and if that doesn't work I guess we'll find a good used head. Happy as can be. Everyone says I sound better than I ever have! 73 to all. Rob CEF# 830 Portland, TN

I still don't understand why you'd need to "jump start" the element with a whistle!? Oh well...as long as it works! Good job. Hank~CEF559 Long Island NY

It seems strange to me too. I am going to try some replacement (non astatic) element on it. I talked to the guy that sells them, and he claims he's heard of the problem. Last night when I got home I decided to take the whole mike apart and rewire/re-soldier EVERYTHING. Boy oh boy does it looks nice. All the soldier points are absolutely perfect. I was pretty mad when it was still messing up so I got on the air with my stock mic (which everyone knows stock RCI mikes are junk and asked all my cb buddies if anyone had a spare d104 laying around. Luckily 2 answered and I went and picked one up. Anyway, I'll buy the generic element and post on here how good it works! It'll probably be Fri or Sat before I recieve it. Rob CEF# 830 Portland, TN
