I've had a bit of a search on this but can't seem to find any info. I've recently installed a boot mount and was wondering if i should use an extra ground? It has rubber feet to help prevent scratching the paint, which would provide insulation. But would the two grub screws underneath that hold it to the bootlid provide enough earth or should i run a separate earth from the mount to chassis? I ask this because other mates that i talk to have said i have lost some signal strength, but i am receiving as well as always. Any help much apppreciated. CEFFFCEF Bob CEF703 CVC26.

By "boot" mount...I assume that would be the same as trunk lid mount? If you scrape/sand away a bit of the paint to bare metal where the screws contact I would think you'd be OK but I'd also ground strap the lid to the rest of the vehicle. Don't rely on the hinges...the manufacturer didn't think about them HAVING to complete a good ground. I like to strip the shield from old coax and solder some eye connectors then use sheetmetal screws to attach to again....someplace I've already scratched to bare metal. One on either side should do it. Other than all that I have seen signal differences between to seemingly similar antennas mounted in the same location. A buddy once swapped an antenna specialist mag mount on his roof with a NEW Wilson "Lil Wil". I was there to help set SWR. After a day or so I noticed his signal was low as compared to the usual in all his same locations. He exchanged what he thought was a bad willie for a new one and had pretty much the same results. From a single location where he was hitting me with S2 he reached up and replaced the 2nd WIL with the original 36" Antenna Specialist...shazam...S3+. Go figure. Best of luck and Happy new year Bob! Thanks Hank. Yeah sorry about the bootlid, you guys call it a trunk. I'll give it a go. The antenna is in exactly the same place except the old mount was one that used self tappers to mount it which i removed because of a rust paranoia. It is a Ford...lol. Also using the same antenna so i'll give it a bit more earth and see what the results are. Again thanx Hank and a Happy New Year to you and yours too champion. CEFFFCEF Bob CEF703 CVC26.

Even "I" am old enough to know what the "boot" is on a car. Put that thar spare in the boot. The only problem is, you really need to hear me say that. Then you would know real southern speaking. Anyway, have a good day all over the world. Keith in Atlanta |
