Reason i ask is because of the 102 inch whip and ball mount. My friend told me a story of a guy on a motorcycle following a pickup with a 102inch steel whip on it. and that he saw the whip come around and nail the guy on the bike in the throat. the guy died instantly. I'd like to have a 102 inch whip but would hate to have this happen to somebody. I can just see that thing whipping around when i turn corners. especially on a low small sports car. |

I do not believe that happened or will ever happen. It would be a very bizzar freak accident. I am very familar with the 102 inch whip and I have been riding motor bikes for years. For that to even possibly remotely happen the biker would have to be tail gating extremely close to the truck asking for trouble! Then for the whip to bend down that far they would have to be traveling extremely fast like well over 100mph with the tip pointing right at the biker accelerating into it while the truck decelereates. Its all urban legend. Nothing but a myth and rumor that spreads with story changes. Sure the 102 inch stainless whip sways and whips around but at highway speeds 50 mph plus the wind pins it back and occasionally a semi passing by will move it around a bit. Driving slow it will swing around if you hit a big bump or jerk the steering wheel side to side but under normal driving you have nothing to worry about. kenny cef491 |

Hotwire is right in that as long as you are using a good quality spring and the bolts in the ball mount are tight you should not have any trouble. Hotwire, I did have something similar happen but not as deadly. I used to run a three-band pronged HF vertical on a mount on my SUVs front bumper. I had used a normal ball mount spring and all was OK while I had the higher band resonators on it. One day during an Emergency Excersise I needed to use the 80 tip (first time since installing the antenna).I went on my way to the assembly point and at one stage was following a police bike. This policeman stopped suddenly to avoid a small child and I did likewise - the tip of the 80m resonator laid itself ever so gently on the policemans shoulder. Needless to say I went a bought a stiffer spring before proceeding any further. Tech237 KD7IEB |
