I have noticed more recently lately noise from florescent signs and buildings with exterior florescent lighting. It’s annoying as “heck” especially when my youngest is telling me a story while we are in route some where. She'll look at me and say (now this is a 10 year old talking) “Dad must you have that on at this time”? Her smart *** comments always keep me from getting upset because I just want to laugh at them… Here in Northern VA laughing at the crazies driving is a good thing or else you would get too stressed out. Anyway, has anyone noticed excessive radio noise from florescent lights? Now this morning driving into work I was next to a Honda Hybrid I heard it as it accelerated through my radio and that was the first time I had heard that interferance. Oh, the radio I have heard all this on is a Magnum 257 (amber display) with the ANL and noise blanker on also I have a Magnum power cord with filter installed.
Anyway just curious to see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks

Well I have not noticed any different noise. Perhaps you need to do some more grounding. Run grounds from the engine, firewall, frame etc., as well as from all your equipment. I have several redundant grounds on my Jeep. Remember also just because your engine is bolted in the car does not mean it has a ground. Same goes with the body. All of them have rubber mounts. I also have a noise filtering power cord on my radio.

But I wonder why after all of this time I hear more than normal? I know that there are more buildings around now but I was thinking (I know that is probably a bad thing) that maybe the (I hope I spell this right) ballast inside the fixtures are just being made cheaper therefore they put out more noise. Hummm I wonder what the FCC would say about that. but then again to call “Uncle Charlie”… Ok maybe not… Plus I am sure that they aren’t too worried about one person who likes to talk and listen on 11 meters…
Oh WildRat I never had this problem as much before. But I did think about adding some more ground straps. I do have one from my antenna mount to the frame as it is a trunk mounted K40. I had a Wilson 1000 trunk mount there and I was getting excessive noise then so I added the braided ground strap but it didn't go away. My solution, I went back to my K40 as I didn't have the noise then and my SWR's went back down to a more usable level. The SWR's for the Wilson were too high I even had a local radio guy check them for me in case I was doing something wrong.
Anyway thanks for your suggestions…
Thanks,

TomCat, I pick up lots of noise too. Flourescent lights do it, stop lights as I drive under them and one of the worst is when I drive by the SUPER WAL-MART! Super Wal-mart cripples my radio with a swoosh of static! Also as I sit in my work parking lot with car off I can hear the metal halides ballasts kick on and as the light gets brighter it goes away. I also notice that FORD vehicles, every last one of them as they drive by produce a terrible whine. Not different Ford makes. No Mercurys, no Linclons only cars and trucks with the word FORD on them.
I do know this! If a flourescent light is going bad, it will make even more noise. So maybe somebody needs to replace some tubes once in a while.
