Stock I would say a Palomar SSB500 early model. We are talking FCC type accepted CB's right? If not then I would have a different answere. Next in line would be Grant's both President and Uniden models.I think in an AM only model the old Uniden 76XL and the Cobra 29 would be right up their! Now for SSB the President Lincoln,Alan9001,HR2510,2600 are hard to beat!!!

Now if we are talking 10 meter or Export radio's on AM things would change signifiacantly. The AR3500 rocks on AM and SSB.The RCI 2950 not to be confused witht he new 2950DX also had great AM audio and good SSB sound. The Lincoln and it's cousins had average AM audio nothing to write home about in stock trim. The early Kenwood adn Yaseu HF radios like the 500 series, 800 series and 101 series all had strong AM and great SSB.

What do you mean by the terms loud and stock? Pretty much any radio can be made loud by either defeating or badly adjusting the limiter and then using a powered microphone. Does that count as stock?

I prefer to have clean audio rather than loud. If I want higher than normal modulation levels I use a compression microphone or a speech processor. With properly adjusted limiters I still sound clean, but have higher average modulation levels.

Years ago I chatted on a regular basis with a guy who competed in keydowns. He swore by old Cobra 29s and had a stack of them for spares.

i can tell you that the magnum radios are plenty loud stock. (no mods done by owner. im guessing thats what you mean by stock)

as for type accepted CB radios; i think the 858 SSB chassis such as the 139xlr sound the best out of the box.
they have a built in speech comressor that gives them a bit of an edge.
never heard a stoner pro40 or the CPI rigs, but ive heard they were awesome.

You know I have heard a few Galaxys that was pretty darn loud on AM. There are so many variables. You can take 2 of the same radios and depending on the setup and how the operator talks, holds the mic, etc, etc , one can be louder than the other.
A lot of times a cber will think a cb is loud when actually its distortion that causes the illusion of loudness. Does that make sense?
I prefer to have a nice clean audio where you only hear my voice. This way my voice really is louder and power is not being wasted on background noise and the sound of me breathing. Anytime you listen to a person talk on the radio and you can hear stuff like their breathing, the sound the mic physically makes when keyyed, the tv in the background, all that is wasted power and your voice will not travel as far. As the recieving station gets farther away all that noise including your voice just fade out into the static. Biggest reason why I never use power mics.

I agree loud is only good if it is clean with almost no distortion. I have never understood how anyone could think that sounding like you had a mouth full of cotton sounded cool!
