Cornbrown,
I use a Snap-On A.V.R. it has a variable carbon pile load tha can handle up to 750 amps.It can show volts and amps at the same time so you can tell at what current the charge voltage starts to drop.it also has a bargraph led display to give an indication how much ripple your alternator has.It also came with a nice manual and various leads and instructed how to "full field" just about any alternator made so you could read the max current the alt was capable of.

Cornbrown,
I just looked through the online auctions and it looks like the Snap On avr's are listed from $20.00 to $650.00. You might have your neighborhood full service garage put you in touch with your local Snap On dealer.there are also other brands to inquire about like OTC and Sun.I have been out of that trade for a while now and sure there are others.

Well First of all what type of alt. is it???? That makes one heck of a difference. And second what is it on???
Actual output in amps is largely determined by temperature...for example when its hot you could loose 40% And don't EVER believe the junk these online alternator dealers say...They don't tell you that the alternater needs to spin 8,000 rpms plus to achive there 200 amp or what ever amp mark...Always look for a alternator that is rated At normal operating temperature and look for the performance ant different rpms...lower the better...

could'nt you take it to an auto parts store that has the alt/batt tester?they could probably tell you unless you want 1 to keep an eye on what its doing. Id like to know what mine does.i know im pushing it pretty hard.
