USUALLY 15 TO 18 WATTS IS ALL YOU WILL GET OUT OF THE RADIO WITHOUT DOING OTHER MODS TO IT. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, THAT IS NOT A 10 METER RIG AND THAT IS PRETTY GOOD OUTPUT FOR A CB RADIO. IF YOU WANT MORE THAN THAT, I WOULD SUGGEST PUTTING A LITTLE HELP IN LINE WITH IT. ANOTHER THING, NO ONE ON THE OTHER END WILL BE ABLE TO SEE A DIFFERENCE ON THEIR RECEIVE TO WARRANT TRYING TO SQUEEZE A FEW MORE WATTS OUT OF IT AND THE FINAL WILL NOT LAST VERY LONG IF YOU HAMMER IT ANY HARDER. bruce....i'm surprised at you 199 is right, grumpy. more surgery is required-such as NPC-RC with volted final, & even with that, IF you were to see 20-22 watts PEP-real 12-13 RMS swing-nobody is gonna notice the difference. my XL in my mobile keys less then 1 watt, though i usually leave it at 2, & swings 15 PEP & i get get out just fine |

Pat, quit showing off...LOL.... seriously though Grumpy, listen what Patzerozero and the rest of the guys are saying, you dont want to push it too much or your radio will be like one I have, it's in the closet collecting dust because I had it hacked before I knew any better. Weird...before I started messing with my Grant LT it did 21 PEP on a Bird with no mods or clipped limiter. Just took it out of the box, cranked up the AMC pot, set the carrier at 5 watts and there it was. |

I think that the 2SC1969 is officaly rated at 19watts but you get some that are high beta and really scream. Nothing wrong with 15 watts though. I have seen Grant XL's and Cobra 148's vary from arounf 15-24 watts peak on AM. It is no different from cars. Even though Corvettes role off the same line once in a while you get one that just has more HP then it should! Same thing with electronics. The only way around this type of variablity is to go through test each componet and replace any that are not putting out 100%. In this case it would not be worth the cost to do so as the pay off in the end would be minor. I will also say that if your tech works on amature gear freq. and use's a scope, signal generator, atenuators etc...... then he is going for the most clean power across the band width he can get you not peak power. The same thing is true of modulation and audio. A true tech will give you the most he can with out your audio clipping excessively. A shop that only use's meters is not going to get you as quality of a sound.Sound quality is one of the most often over looked aspect of CB! According to Cobra their are 30 million CB's in use and I would venture a guess that at least 15 million of them sound bad due to poor mod's to try to get bigger sound. |
