I just purchased a Galaxy 949, being that it has variable power, why couldnt i just turn the power all the way down to run my amp? Or would this not work without having to tune the radio also? I want to have it set up so that during the day i can talk with just the regular 6-7 watts and not bother any neighbors, Then at night turn on the power. my amp is a Palomar 225. |

Yes you can use it that way. Just set your low dead key to operate your 225. Set your high dead key. Turn your moulation pot up. SSB should work Just fine also. I have a northpoint NT 6 HP radio that I am trying to set up this way. The only problem is some one worked on the radio be fore me. It has a lot of swing DK 10 Swinging 30. Does any one know how to turn down the modulation on this radio? I tried turning the modulation pot but it does nothing. Is there a diode or transistor that mignt have been clipped. |

Floridarebel83, A while back I had a Galaxy 959 that I played with and did all the mods to it. Its the same as the 949 with a freq counter. You can turn the variable all the way back to run your amp. Thats what the variable is there for. I would suggest a 2 watt deadkey and the max swing the radio can do. The problem I had was with the variable all the way down to 2 watts deadkey it brought down the swing as well. Radio was capable of around 20 watts PEP variable all the way up and the most swing I could get with the variable all the way down was about 15 or so. Trying to remember the mod I had done and the 2 parts( 1 resistor 1 diode in series, I think) used to get 2 watts deadkey and max swing. Some people call it a swing kit. So with the kit I had 2 watt deadkey 20ish watt swing. Without it I had a 2 watt deadkey and somewhere around 12-15 watts swing. Regardless though it should drive the amp well enough I think. I'm thinking you Pal 225 is a 2 pill 1446 and you just might have enough to be in the butter zone especially on SSB. I was always told I was driving my 225 to hard with 21 watts SSB. This came in from all over the country. Good luck with it though. Wish I still had mine. 73 Kenny CEF491 |

Chances are that 225 has 2xMRF455's. Set your variable DK to where the amp keys no more than 50 in "HIGH" and should swing to around 175ish+. You'll probably shut the amp off and see your radio now has around a 2w DK as Hotwire said. DXmodulator...if the VR for your modulation no longer works then YES...someone at one time has clipped the modulation limiter. I have no idea where it is or what its labeled as in that radio. Maybe Lon has it listed in the "Mods" section to the left? Of course I assume your not running a power mic that you could turn down. If the mod limiter has not been removed and only had a leg clipped and folded upward then your in luck...just bend it back to contact the remaining "stub" and solder the connection. Hank CEF559 |

the 'mic gain' on the radio will lower PEP/swing . 'Chances are that 225 has 2xMRF455's. Set your variable DK to where the amp keys no more than 50 in "HIGH" and should swing to around 175ish+. You'll probably shut the amp off and see your radio now has around a 2w DK as Hotwire said.' is a BETTER way to set up an amp & radio, rather then just setting the radio to a specific output & leaving it there. you can always lower your dead key more by turning the radio down more. same with PEP, turn the mic gain down more. with the amp on, you'll be surprised how low you can go before the audio drops noticeably. |

TR-52 may have been desoldered it is under the board on the right w/ the knobs torward you, my nt-4 had that same thing, the modulation was booming, i replaced the transistor neatly from the back side and all is better I can adjust the MOD pot, i went through the same thing wanting to run a amp the mod was swinging way too much for an amp. Is you FM variable on that radio or always 45 Watts+-?? on mine the AM is variable but the FM is constant w/ no adjustment...kinda strange setup if I was to key up in FM with the amp on I would prolly smoke it.... |

I pulled the thread from when i was looking: I had the part in since with no probs... Like I said it is laid out differenty so be careful when you put it in, the E B C is laid out differently, the voltage specs are slightly different also so I dont know the long term affect of using it but so far so good pushin a 100 watt mosfet which is all I needed for my purposes. BTW is is similar to a galaxy board. Posted on Friday, September 08, 2006 - 4:19 am: Where can I pick up a replcement TR32 Picked up a Galaxy cheap, scoped it and couldnt adjust MOD, Found TR 32 Missing Hehe, Anyway to get one with out buying Bulk? Hopefully I will have 1 less splatter box out there. Much better now that I can adjust Modulation, no more flatties. |

Since TR-32 in a Galaxy 66 radio is a 2sc945p then could this be the right replacement part? Which Galaxy board is a match for the northpoint NT-6-HP? |

Yes 2sc945P is a direct replacement, I had no luck finding any info on a northpoint board but they are based on the same chassis - google - EPT360014B and your head will start to spin..... A DX77HML Galaxy was the closet match I could find w/ Dual Finals but it has ssb circutry.. Also My serial on the edge of the NT-4 board is strangely - 9821R20 - if you see that on the edge of the board by the knob end....Google the Number - 9821r20 comes up as one of the new strykers so I am guessing the northpoint was a pre-stryker radio?.... I chose to use the radio shack part because it was quick and easiest route for me to do, You can try copper or another supplier to see if they will sell you an exact replacement from a dead radio? Good Luck , my NT-4 is still kickin butt, I am driving a little hornet MOSFET and get good reports. Dont key up a linear with it on FM though I think it will pop it, mine goes out at 40+ carrier on FM...... |
