I just blew up my amp! A resistor burned up in it and I'm wondering what would cause this. Is it possible the transistors went bad and that is what caused it? Is it obvious when the transistors go bad... burned looking etc? New to this and don't know what to look for. Had problems with the relay sticking but used a 9 foot jumper and that seemed to help along with the swr now down pretty low 1.3:1 with amp on . But as I checked swr and power output is when resistor blew. Any ideas would be great. My system is as follows: 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Magnum S9 nitro with dk set at 2 watts Palomar Elite 450 HD Super mini 8 Coax Wilson 1000 mag mount on roof |

Lightwriter, WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM! Sam Lewis designed the S-9. S-3, S-6 radio's as well as the Omega Force S-45 to work with a 4 pill Amplifier like the Texas Star 500 or Similar Amplifier that uses: 4 - 2SC2879's. Your Palomar 450 HD only has 4-1446's in it. Your radio was just too much for your amp. Hope this help's, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9CEF CVC#2 |

I have been using the Palomar Elite 450 HD with my S9 for almost 2 years now and the only issue I have, is that the amp will sometimes not un-key on high when in SSB mode. I have used 3, 6, 9 foot jumpers and still have the issue....not all the time though. Never on AM, just SSB and only on the high setting. |

I used a 9 foot jumper and that seemed to help with my un-key issue but then again maybe it just started to not stick because I fried that resistor....it used to stick when cold when I'd turn it on and when I'd key up when it was cold. Is there any way to check to see if the transistors also got fried without any test equipment? |
