I have a friend that has to sell his Texas Star DX1600V, and I'm thinking about buying it. Anyone use this amp yet? What do ya'll think about running it with the S9? I run both AM and SSB, so I hopeing it will work well in both modes. Any input fella's? FWIW the radio dk's 1.5 watts and swings to 52 in AM with the variable turned all the way down, and swings to about 45 in SSB |

That would be one mean setup! You definatley would be a tough competitor on AM but on SSB thats way more than enough juice to talk anywhere you wanted. Leece Neville alternator to get the job done and a Predator 10K for the icing on the cake! |

from there website that one will take 100watts in to get fulloutput.so ya may not get the full out of it but should definately not have any worries about overdriving it |

the dx1600 is built for 30 key/150 PEP input. so, if you turn the S9's variable RF power up 'full', to maybe 10-12 watts or so, & IF it still peaks at 50, you'll probably see 100+ dead key & 400+ PEP. |

I think Capt205 is talking about the new variable 10 pill amp! Of course the 8 pill section of the amp needs more than the S9 can do. The S9 is most likely to much for the 2 pill driver but if you got the radios power down enough then it might work. Who likes doing that anyway? What a pain! Not sure how much input a 2 driving 8 can handle. I'm thinking, for an amp such as the Texas Star DX1600V,it would be easier on the amp, things would run cooler and most of all sound way better to operate the 2 pill driver into the 8 pills with a single final radio such as a Uniden Grant or Cobra 148. A 15 to 20 watt radio should get close to all the clean watts capable out of the amp. My opinion of course, and this is the way I would probably go about it all. Been eye ballin this amp for a while now. Capt205, for an S9 its probably easier to just run a DX500V. Let the S9 do its thing...but to each his own.Doing our own thing! Thats what its all about anyway! |

have never seen the new 1600, so it never entered my mind. i assume it's driven with 2-2290's....that will require restraint & turning things WAY down. my S9 works just fine with a dx350, but that's 2-2879's. if you set the 1600 up the way ANY amp should be, you should be able to make it work. turn RF power on S9 to 'low', & mic gain to minimum, starting with topgun 'off'. then adjust RFpower til amp keys 200. turn mic gain up til RMS swing reaches max, check PEP swing. probably 900-1000. see how it runs, sounds & how hot it gets. start over again & do the same with topgun 'on'. see how your signal & audio reports are & adjust accordingly. it'll probably do 400 dead key, though PEP, as well as RMS swing & AUDIO QUALITY could suffer. put fans on it. while i said my S9 worked fine with a dx350, it got 'crunchy' sounding reports with a 250, & where it had to go to sound good....defeated the purpose of the S9. a 2x2290 davemade would sound good keying 100 & swinging over 300...but not forever! |

Pat, The new Texas Star 1600V is two 2879's driving eight 2879's. It can be ran as just a 2 pill, just an 8 pill or combined for a mega 2 driving 8 amp! You can see all kinds of good pics and info at cb tricks! Actually I'm shocked! I was sure you was aware of this amp. But thrilled to actually be turning you on to info about an amp. |

yeah, i am aware of it....but prefer my customs.... the PAPERWORK on the 1600v says 1600 output. those who sell it say 1200 output. the watt meter behind my davemade says 'OUCH'. need i say more |

Although I feel that an amp that size is a little much I still would like to have one. Hey I like the customs to but my love affair with Texas Star is pretty strong. Making plans to buy a new used vehicle to replace the Chevy soon. Gonna make sure the next set of wheels has plenty of juice! |

That's right - they were the weak ones anyway! Now only the strong ones are left. I have the same theory regarding beer. |

I think Pat would need to worry more about going near Painkillers mobile, like a mile radius. Unlike Painkiller, Pat does'nt bleedover 10 channels up and down....in INDIANA!!! |

Thats just crazy! I wonder if **** is aware of the abuse he is inflicting on his self? Anyway he is an ok guy. Managed to contact him one day about a month ago on 11 and he sent some flowers my way. A lot big dogs just ignore the little guys. You know I always wondered, How far away is safe enough? Even in DX land many miles away he is really strong. While I'm on the subject of hi power. A DXer on channel 6 from Texas is a strong force as well. As well as power he must have a very high antenna. A huge beam is what I would say he uses. I know **** is big but there is no other DXer I know of who signal usually never drops out at all even when conditions are low. Always has at least an S9 signal or better and as far as channel 6 goes his audio qaulity is excellent. When ****** keys he locks 6 down in the cornfields and nobody else is heard whenever he wants to. May be interesting to hear ***** and **** compete someday.

Does anyone know where I can find a power supply to handle the 1600V as a base unit? I was looking into the 200 amp X-Force, but they're unregulated and will swing up to 18 volts. Is that safe for the 1600V? I was told that I could also run a 1000 (CCA) car battery in series (or was that parallel?) with my current 35-amp Pyramid supply and my 6-amp trickle charger, ALL POS to POS and NEG to NEG? Is this true? ANY help will be appreciated! Thanks. |

I don't think your 1600 would last very long on one of the competition power supplies unless you could find a voltage regulator for it. If you did run the battery with the power supply and charger, you will still have voltage drop when your on the key for more than a few seconds. The slight voltage differences in the power supply and the charger may cause other problems. If you had 2 60 amp regulated power supplies I think you can run them in parallel (neg to neg pos to pos) and have a 120 amp regulated supply. For this to work I think the voltage from the two supplies has to be exactly the same. I have not tried this, so it might be wise to get some other opinions |

a red top optima with a sears charger in the mid-mode(5A/30A/200A....don't remember) works fine with the dx1600....of course his battery is outside of the house in this custom setup. it was a lot cheaper then a power supply. i won't mention painkiller & clarence c carter, 'wire. ccc i hear even when there are NO conditions! while there are some 'big boys' that can take charge much of the time, 187 NJ & super bowl steel jacket in GA are really the only 2 others that face little if any competition. when they are on, like the other 2, nobody gets past 'em. |

Pat, Oh yeah I'm very aware of 187Outlaw and Steel Jacket. The guy in Texas seems to stand head and shoulders above them all. Probably cause his beam is pointed right at me or you most the time. Colorich, If you got the cash I would skip the battery hassle. The 10 pill 1600V has four power wires. 2 black & 2 red. Pyramid makes an 80 amp supply. Two of those Pyramids should do the trick. If you want an X Force P.S. I would find out how to get one made custom or use a regulater.Texas Stars should never have more than 14 volts |
