Hi. I have the opportunity of buying one of these for $150.
Is this a good base amp? It's the one with a power supply built in.
Does it work with SSB?
What is it rated at?
Is it a "dirty" amp? I hate TVI issues. I will ground it properly.
Is itr high drive or low drive?
Also, is it tuned for 11? Thanks.

Can't answer most of your questions James but I DO await an answer myself.
Been looking to upgrade the base station to a regular BASE amp and was tossed between the KLV550 or Boomer500. With the prices new approaching a new mobile comp amp...I start to think in other directions! And thats when I get lost in my own mind and forget what I was after in the first place!
I did a search here a while ago and couldn't really find any info except the basics reguarding the boomer:
*Don't expect much more than 350 PEP
*Does not SEEM to be ssb biased (but my Gray300 isn't either and I've had no complaints yet)
*The built in 35A supply is a little overkill but for what you'll use it with should work MORE than fine.
* High or low drive will depend which transistors yours was built with. I would assume it's got 4x1446's so no more than 4w input to start OR put in whatever it takes to get NO MORE than 80-100w dead key out of amp.
*Should be ready to go on 11mtr...I said "SHOULD BE" :-) $10 says Yes :-)
* Dirty? I thought they were AB1 class but could be wrong. You'll get out what you put in. If you drive it hard and use a clipped radio with a D104 set on "10" you will bleed...Tv's , radios what have you. Run it EASY with a clean radio and chances are you will have reduced your chances of TVI /harmonics greatly. At that point its up to your grounding, coax and antenna system.
Looking forward to a response from an actual user of this amp.
If it were me? If it works..you can't beat that price for a good base amp...and it'll be all you really need to shoot DX...IN MY OPINION!

Hank

Hi. yeah, I figured between my IMAX and even just running the amp on low, I should be OK. you say it is NOT meant for SSB? that kind iof stinks. Yeah, i know, I can get a big power supply and run a small texas Star amp in my home base, but I remember reading somewhere that having a mobile amp with a power supply in the base cause TVI issues. Am I wrong on that? Thanks,.

I BELIEVE it has no delay for ssb which to me is strange. There are ways around it and I would not let it deter me for a minute if the amp itself was in good working order and the price was right.
Have no idea about the mobile/power supply being dirty issue. I think its more a matter of how you set up and and drive the equipment.
I'd tell you to hit it nice and easy but I'm the first one to hit it harder to be heard in DX land!

Hank :-)

Base amps have built in power supplies.
So, i DON'T see why an external power supply
should cause any TVI issues.
Run a good TVI filter after the amp.
Plenty of people run mobile amps/PS for there
base set-ups.

I have the Palomar Deluxe 35A which is the same amplifier. 4x1446's, auto delay for SSB, using it with a Magnum S9, Turner +3 and an IMAX 2000. I see 400-450 watts depending on where the variable and mic gain are set on the radio. Been using it for almost 2 years with no issues. I am keying 1.5 watts into it and swinging 52.

I get good reports all over TampaBay, and if I can hear them, I can talk to them when skip is rolling.
