i have a friend who has an s-3 magnum that has static when the motor is running.it is hooked direct to the battery,motor off no problem

Two trick you can try.

1) Run shielded cables to the battery. two individual cables one for positive and one for negative. Ground the shield at the battery end only.

2) Yo can also use a toroid core - wind half og the core clockwise and then wind the other half anti-clockwise. This will sometimes work wonders.

3) I lied. Try adding a capacitor from the positve of the alternator to ground. In fact add a 1Megohm resistor ins series too. The resistor does not help the static but will protect teh alternator by limiting current if the capacitor should ever short out.
