I have a Palamar 300 Elite with a 148 GTL Cobra. Wilson 5000 Magnnet mount, the radio is stock. It seems to do pretty good. I run it on high all the time. I don't know how long the amp will take 4watts, so far so good. I would like to try one of the Texas Star amps. At least a 350 with my stock 4watt 148, should I get a high drive or low drive? I would want it to last for a good while. Is 4watts enough for the TS 350 hd? It seems to work good with my Palamar 300 Elite ld.

Your 148 would be great with a low drive. I say go for the 667V by texas star. Great amp, perfect for that radio. Just be sure to not go over 4 watts. 2 swinging 4 would be good. Thanks.

I use the Texas Star DX500v with my Cobra 148. The radio has a 2 watt dead key 8 watt swing RMS about 20 watts PEP. The amp does around 120 deadkey and 500 watts PEP.It was very easy to achieve the 1 to 4 power ratio that anyone who desires a clean audio must have! SSB the amp is just amazing on power. I would suggest the DX500v. It will handle the 148 and then some and if you ever decide to get a more powerful dual final radio the amp will work with it as well. I'm very please with this combo in the mobile. I do nothing but DX and I always get great unsolicited compliments! It uses a lot of power so be sure your battery and charging system is up to par!

Hawakeye,
WELCOME TO THE FORUM!
These guys are on to something :-) I don't think the DX350 would provide with enough of a difference over the Pal300 to make you happy.
By the way..it'll go quite a while on 4w input.:-)
Have a quick peak here to see my findings.

hank's right. if your 300 is working, the dx350 won't give you anything else for the cost. need to double your output for ANY noticeable gain. & locals may only tell you 'audio got louder'. on DX, the increase to 500 watts PEP by way of a dx500 or dx667 should put you in the mix a bit more often. you're still only using a very innefficient antenna system compared to a base with a full sized antenna. 500 watts in your car is probably comparable to 80-100 from a base with a 5/8l antenna.
