I have a RCI 2980 it has always worked very well for the 3yrs. that I have had it,all except some stations i talked to says it sounds off freq.,but not all stations.I wonder if i should invest i a 6 digit freq. counter to get exactly on freq. I have also notice that when i key up on sideband sometimes i have a carrier, but it still talks well, swr 1.1 use a standard mike, and D104. Do i need to invest in a new raido like a 2985, can not afford a Kenwood or Yaesu. I do not do much talking because i like runing a clean sounding station. oh yea i also run a antron 99 and barefoot, but think about getting a Spectrum 1600.Thanks for the help Wayne Wayne 3870@aol.com

The "carrier" on SSB and the "Off freq" kind of run hand in hand. I think you need a full alignment. The problems you describe would happen if the Local Oscillator was off frequency.
