Turner Microphones are my favorites. I buy, sell, and restore them. No other mics sound as good to me. Personal favorites, the +2 both desk and handheld. For you Astatic D104 lolli pop fans, you had better start collecting them. They are getting harder to find, and the cost is going up. I also collect the Astatic D104, and have one of each model NIB. Lucky me... |

TURNER mics, some Shure mics.! Brought too many astatic mics "brand new" with bad mic elements. The Turners & Shures I've owned since mid 70's to 80's still going strong! |

Any mic. made by Astatic gets my vote for favorite. Dads run them forever and I still have them(2 D-104s) I just ain't got them wired for the Melaka and am to lazy to drag out the Madison just to use them. Also have several D-104s that are brand new never been used. |

My favorite mic is the Astatic D104 M6 handheld. Makes my Lincoln scream. I have experimented with it running power and turned wide open they say I'm "LOUD LOUD LOUD" but clear as can be with ZERO distortion (my goal was clarity). I don't run it that way because I know it's way overmodulating and does really splatter some TVI when I do it. Turned down to sane normal settings, it really sounds good according to anyone I talk to. Thanks to Tech181 for your pointers on this awhile back. Your settings you told me about pretty much mirror what I read on a friends meter concerning modulation settings. |

I'd say the D104 Silver Eagle which I've owned more than one of (which I regret selling now of course) BUT, I'd have to say the HEIL.. the big shiny $220 one. No idea what it sounds like but I must have one so it must be the best! :-)Seriously, D104 all the way... for now. |

For a hand mike, I personally like my astatic d 104-m6. It's the old version with the 7 volt canister-style battery. The newer 9 volt versions have a smaller element and lack the audio quality of the older version with the larger elements. I use one exclusively on my washington and get very good reports. As for a desk mike, I like the sound and style of the turner +2's. I don not own one but have heard many, and am impressed with all that i hear. One of these days I'll have to get one of my own! 73's stickshift |

My favorite mic has got to be an older one made by Sennheiser, a studio quality ribbon mic with a tube type matching amplifier...can't remember it's model number. Used it in the 70's/80's and wish I still had it. It matched my deep voice with a passion!!! Lots of similar mics still madee but I don't want to pay the price tag on those babies!!! $500.00 and up, most being $1200!!! to $1500.00!!! Ahhh, men and boys, and the price of their toys. |

I wanted to experiment with a D-104 S/E (my fav) with a Heil element also. And I did what SLIM1 did [similar] with a S/E once and put channel up and down momentary buttons on the base of it next to the PTT bar. Now if I only could have gotten them back-lit! |

I have a Silver Eagle a Black and Chrome D-104 Special and a D-104 with a 10-DA head. An Astatic 1104-c a Turner SSB+2 and finally a Turner Supersidekick, and have been told the Super Sidekick sounds better than all of the others. I like the feel and the lock on the 1104-C and was told it sounded pretty good but the SSK just sounds better than the rest. Includiing any of my 15 hand mic's. |

Bob_p It was a sad day when Turner stopped production of the SuperSide Kick. Still today it is one of the best mics ever made for sideband because of its true dynamic cartridge and tuned amplifier. It just blew the Astatics right out of the water when it came to quality and especially SSB use. Jeff Tech548 |

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. I was out of radio for 30 years and honestly thought the 10-DA head was going to be the answer to a Q-5 SSB station when I recently got back into radio. But everyone says the SSK sounds the better than any other mic. I have. It is a real shane Turner went out of bussiness it left a pretty big void now that it's gone. I don't see anyone making good sounding affordable SSB desk mic's out there.

Yankee Thanks thats what I've been hearing. Except one guy said it wasn't as good on SSB as the +3. Well I bought it for $20 + $10 shipping. I really wanted a +3B, but those things are selling pretty high if they're in decent shape. I saw a New in box never wired +3 sell for over $100.00 the other day. Now there's a used but in very good shape +3B selling for $69.00 plus $10 shipping. I did try to get info on that CS-1 before I bought it, but it was a short auction and had no time to check it out. I should have gone ahead with the DM 452. But ... |

After 41 years on the air, and owning many Astatic D-104s, I have to say they are the best in their class. They don't do good on all radios, a lot of radios don't like them no matter what you do, they just don't sound good on every radio. At present I'm running a stock Silver Eagle without any of those nasty add on noise makers such as roger beeps and echo, and I've been told that my Uniden Grant XL sounds great with it. 73, Carl CEF-357 |

In my somewhat eductated opinion, I must say the Turner+3B is my favorite mic. The entire Turner line for that matter. I have an old Lafayette HB-640 with a +3B mic mounted under my bench with a little Texas Star Mod-V. I have a Kenwood 440 and 950 as well. Everyone who comes over says "Sparky..I want mine to sound like yours". If they only knew!! Seriously, try an old +3B (4 wire +3 won't work correctly due to a normally closed audio line) on a cheapo Cypernet 02A chassis. I think you"ll be impressed. 73's and good DX. |
