Interesting. I may go for my technician class. It says it is 35 questions. Does that mean that I would have to get all 35 questions correct? If not, is it like high school where a 70 perecent is good? Thanks. O yeah, Why is a SSN required on the form? I am very concerned with giving this number out with all the ID theft going around. Especially when this has nothing to do with taxes. Is it a requirement, or can I simply leave that space blank? Thanks. |

The FCC Requires your SSN for it's records and to verify that you are who you say you are. To take QRZ's Practice Amateur Radio Exams for your Technician Class written exam CLICK HERE! OK. Thanks for the info. Here's a question actually my friend just brought up to me. What if a person does not have a SSN? Surely there's other ways to verify who you are (Drivers license, bills, auto records, etc..). After all, not all people have a SSN, just like not all people have a phone number. Heck, I'm even thinking about dumping my phone and turning in my SSN. Heck, it's not like Social security will be there when I need it, and there's always email. Thanks. |

Jameslarson, Use the LINK I posted in my post above and find a test location near you and then contact them and they will tell you EXACTLY what form's of ID you will need to bring to take your test, and you will need to supply photo copies of them to take your test. The VE's at the test location who will give you your test will be able to answer ALL of your Question's for you. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9CEF CVC#2 |

it IS a federal LAW that EVERYBODY has a SSN by a certain age, prior to your legal guardians' 1st income tax filing date, or something like that. that goes for abandoned babies taken in by state, or whatever gov't as well. you need 1 to work legally as well. the fcc will not give you a license without an SSN because it is 1 of those agencies that can refuse a new license or renewal based on leins due to child support, etc. just knowing what you know right now from messing around with CB, 50% correct should be right there, & another 10 questions correct would be from 'retraining' yourself from 'what you think you know' to 'what is really right'. go for it. it's pretty easy....i took mine at huntington town hall, also have frequent tests in lindenhurst. go to www.arrl.org for locations & dates. |

There is no law at all that requires any individual to have a SSN. It is only required if you want to legally work, or if someone wants to claim you as a dependent. Age has nothing to do with it. I could be 65 and I am still not required to have a SSN unless of course someone wants to claim me as a dependent, or to legally work. If for some reason I am born into a rich family, I could literally live my whole life with out a SSN. Sorry if this is a bit off topic. Thanks. |

Hi Tech 237. So when you say "actually there is", you mean "yes there is a way to get it without having to provide a SSN, provided that you can show that you have applied for a SSN". Thanks. |

Simon, I have been fiddling around with the QRZ practise questions as i am seriously considering doing the Foundation licence here. Are these questions relatively pertinent to VK as well or do we do a different type of testing? Also do you know of any site in Aus that is similar to the QRZ site? I have had a look at the WIA website and found zilch. Any help much appreciated. Bob CEF 703 |

Hyperno, The basic questions would be the same but theory would be a bit different. If you use the ones for here as a guide you should not go to far wrong. Dave VK2RD (near Wangi) may have an idea of a VK website that would help you. |

I think you got that backwards...the theory parts would be the same anywhere in the world. But questions covering the law, license class structure, frequency allocations, allowable power, etc. would be different. Also, it is very likely that Australia doesn't use the multiple guess question format and probably doesn't make the actual question pool available to just memorize, rather than to actually know most, or some, of the material/basics. Some countries even require a "classroom course" prior to testing/licensing. Bob's best bet is to seek out a few amateur radio operators, or find a good club, in his country to get the low down on it all. If he can't find any hams in his town/area (unlikely)...he could probably just locate an amateur radio dealer/supplier that can steer him to a beginner's book or to a organization similar as America's ARRL or Great Britain's RSGB. As far as the orinal question about getting a amateur radio license without providing a SS number... I think it very unlikely that he will get a license without providing the number. As for the security/id theft concern...he shouldn't worry about it. The FCC will more than likely keep it more secure than his bank, credit card provider, insurance company, employer, and the many others that already have it. |

Yeah, With all that technical jargon i don't know if it's worth me doing. All i want to do is flap the bottom jaw, not interested in how it works as long as it does. Maybe i'm not cut out to be a "HAM" after all. Bob CEF 703 |

Drake, Actually Australia does use multi-guess format and the pool is available from the right places. I even think Dick Smiths used to sell the book. Australia went to multi-guess in the 70s about 2 years after I did mine using the old 1/4 page per question written exam. Hyperno - all i can get is a black square with a white and yellow border., which is a shame since I used to belong to Westlakes for many years. |

Hi Matt, Was great talking with you Sunday last. I want to wish you the best of luck on getting your ticket back. After I turned the beam your way your audio was solid and very crisp. It's 26 correct on both the technician and general exams, I studied hard, sometimes testing up to 6-7 times a day when I was getting ready to test, only missing 2 questions on both technician in April and general written in May of 2002, although after all the study work of getting ready for general, sorry to say I didn't get the code. About 2 weeks ago, I started hacking at the general again on QRZ.com, passing but not quite at the percentage I want to be at, so I'll be sure I'll again pass the general written. Carl KD5SDM |
