I have a KLV 350 amp and a KLV 200 amp. I would like to try one of them on 10 meters but it does not seem to work. It requires me to turn the tuning knob all the way to the right and still I get a chattering on SSB. Do I need the IC that is removed for 11 meter operation, in order to work on 10m? If so, how can I get one as my amps don't have that IC. Thanks in advance. |

i dont see a klv200 in the RM manuals section. i see a KL200 but that would be solid state, no tuning. on the klv350, i looked at the parts list, and there is no IC listed. there is only one transistor in the whole amp! i doubt that there is a mod for this amp as it is already designed to cover 26-30mhz. i would say most likely you have an SWR issue. you say it happens on both amps. was the same antenna used with both amps? most antennas that are tuned for ch.20 will have an SWR of over 2.0 when you get up to 28.300 and above, which is hopefully where you are planning on using it. i think your amps are reacting to a high SWR that is not there on 11 meters because thats where the antenna is tuned. what is your SWR on ch.20, ch. 40., 27.995mhz, and 28.300mhz? also, it may seem fine with only a few watts put to it, but when you up the power, the problems start to show their faces. good luck, and let me know what the results of your tests are, matt |

Thanks for the reply Kid. I did find the manual on RM's website http://www.rmitaly.com/download/manuals/KLV200-manual_rel_210.pdf and it shows the IC-2 to be a 12C508A. My amps have an 8 pin socket on the board but no IC in the socket. Was hoping Copper might have some spares ones laying around. My antenna is a multi band vertical with traps for 10-15-20-30-40-75 meters and has a good match on 10 meters barefoot. Was hoping to use one of these amps to maybe get another S-unit for those pile ups. |

it took some looking, but i found the mod that you are talking about. seems you've got it right, just need to replace the IC. here's a link to one: http://www.didya.com/12c508a.asp good luck, is the mod for the KLV350 the same? matt |

Thanks for the link. I found them on Mouser's site too, but not sure if there is a minimum order. Yep, the mod is the same for the 350 amp. Just not sure if adding the 12C508A will make a difference or not. Guess I will be the guinea pig. 73 |

you have really peaked my interest on this! i started searching around, and i found the same info you have. remove IC2 for 11 meter operation. to me, that would mean that if you put it back in, you'd be back to square one. looking at the schematic, couldnt you also change the tap point on L7 to optimize it for a certain freq. range? i think i might want to get one of these! i think that the four filter caps should be increased in value. if you look at different versions of the klv350, you will notice that they used to use a 470uF 200v cap, and now they use a 100uF 400v cap. not sure why they changed it. either way, couldnt hurt to increase them to 220uF 400v, or even 470uF 400v. (those would be HUGE!) that would make a difference in swing and modulation quality. BTW, mouser has no minimum, and they are a favorite parts source of mine. have been for years. keep me updated! matt |

Interesting suggestions on the capacitors. I will probably order the 12C508A from Mouser and maybe a couple of other items. I would like to get the KLV tube amp working on 10 & 12 meters if possible. I'll let you know what happens Matt. Paul |

Thanks to Jon666, I got my KLV350 working on 10 meters. He sent me an IC and that seemed to keep the amp from chattering on 10 meters. It still tunes with the tune dial pretty much all the way to the right, but it doesn't chatter and it tunes up nice. I was seeing about 200+ watts on SSB with low power. High power was pegging my 300 watt meter, so don't know where that is peaking. 2 watts on AM from the transceiver was showing 50 watts deadkey. Thanks Jon666. Appreciate the help. |
