I am tring to figure out what is wrong with my friends uniden radio. The model is a uniden pc68xl. It has a good old swing kit in it, so it pretty much sounds like crap and the average 11 meter talker would say wow ohhh boy keys 2 watts swing 16. Anybody with an education in electronics knows this equals distortion. Anyway you key the mic and it takes about 3 seconds before the radio keys up. The tx light lights up as if you were transmitting, but the radio doesn't start to transmit until about 3 seconds after you key. Any help would be nice

sounds a lot like a side band delay cap like you would find in a amp

posibly in the rx/tx switch circut?

posibly the cap used for the swing?

try removing the swing cap resistor combo that makes up the swing kit and replacing the jumper that was there origonaly and see if it still does the same thing.

personaly when someone brings a radio to me with werd simptoms and mods i will always take the radio back to "factory" before i even consider trying to find the problem or defect just so i can eliminate the posibility of the mod being the problem, then after it has been found and fixed properly i will reinstall the mods the person wants to keep butt only the ones that i know to work and i will do this one mod at a time tuning and testing each time to make shure there are not other problems caused by the mod that was just added and only then will i move to the next mod.

hope this helps

Maybe something wrong with the coax and antenna? Did you check the swr?

if it is the common swing kit it will be a cap and a resistor wired in paralell. then added to the board just in front and slightly to the left of the final with the radio component side up and the front facing you, if this is the swing mod that is in it (there are a couple others) than if you remove these two components brom the board you will see a mark for a jumper, simply find a peace of wire and replace the jumper and the swing kit will be removed.

hope this helps.

remove the swing kit from JP6 and replace it with a wire jumper.. Sounds like the cap is taking too long to charge.
