--Hi, all. A friend has a TRC-458 and wants to boost the receive a little bit. Can anyone tell me what VR he would need to adjust? Thanks. |

there is no VR to adjust in the radio that will increase the receive. there is an adjustment for the AGC that some people will turn up, because it "seems" like the receiver sensitivity has been increased, but it really hasnt. the best thing to do is do an alignment on the receiver coils. if you have done this before, then you just need to find out which ones they are. since you were asking about a VR to do this; im going to guess that you havent. (no offense intended) tuning the coils inside a radio can really screw it up if you are guessing about how to do it. your friend might end up with no receive. if people really close to him are hitting him at anywhere near +30db, then the tuning is probably fine, and only an antenna height increase, or new antenna will increase the range. if you are sitting in his driveway, and his RF gain is all the way up, and you are only hitting him with an S-9 or less, then i would say an alignment, among other things is in order. to find out more about how to do this, read my article on aligning a radio here: http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/discus4/show.cgi?tpc=34&post=113535#POST113535 PS- this procedure will NOT work for your radio; you need to get the correct component numbers for your specific radio. again, DO NOT use the part numbers in the article. they are ONLY for the radios described. good luck, matt |

--Hi, Bruce. I don't know, exactly. I figured he just meant that the 458 didn't receive as well as all of his other radios. I will ask him tonight. |
