--Hi, all. I am wanting to purchase an Expo 100 kit for 40 channels below 1, and 40 above ch. 40. My radio is a General Sherman. This radio is supposed to be a clone of the old style Cobra 148, Uniden Grant and the Texas Ranger TR-296 (in fact, it even reads TR-296 on the back of the radio). Well, that should be enough info. to figure out which Expo 100 kit to purchase, but unfortunately, the Uniden Grant (and Uniden Grant XL) takes kit "C", while the Expo 100 kit for the Cobra 148 takes kit "L". There is no info. on which kit the TR-296 takes, though.
--Has anyone ever put in an Expo 100 kit in a General Sherman? I would be willing to bet that very few people have, haha. Which kit should I purchase? Thanks for your time. |

if the crystal in the radio near the PLL is 11.3258mhz; then you need the "L" kit.
i have never used an expo kit myself, but i have heard that they are very unstable, and you wont have much luck using SSB.
the PLL conversions are much better from what i've read on this, and other forums.
pat00 may be able to shed some light on which mods will work on your radio.

Did a search for the "L" kit last evening and the retailers who had them, list them out of stock. Almost sure that the Sherman will use the "L" kit. I have a friend with a Cobra 2000-GTL with the kit conversion and we have to chase him all up and down the clarifier to understand him. I agree that the PLL conversion is going to be much more stable on sideband. The PLL conversion for the Sherman is going to be the same as the older Cobra 148-2000 GTL and Grant XL-LT. My Uniden Grant XL can set for hours on sideband and be stable dead center on frequency with the FC-347 counter.

--Hi, and thanks for the info. Maybe I just had good luck with mine, but I have a President P400 and it has the "B" kit, and it works great. I also had two friends that each had a Cobra 142GTL that also took a "B" kit, and none of them had problems with it either...we'd sit for hours and chat. Years ago, I had heard someone say something about some of the Expo kits being faulty, so that may have had something to do with the problem of stability. Thanks. |

they probably use cheapo crystals in them nowadays.

China China Town crystals, and I'll almost say for sure that's where the crystals come from. I don't believe that the company that made the Expo Kits would want to go as far as paying the cost of crystals from International Crystals of Oklahoma City, each custom cut crystal from International is now right up there around $35.00. Also I understand that Jan Crystals of Florida is now right up there in price.

the expo kits always worked better for me in AM only radios-25/66/68 & 29/76/78. only tuning for one freq. the 148/grants i'd used 'em in ALWAYS had one heckuva time getting LSB & USB aligned correctly. though it could be done. probably 10 years since i put an expo kit in an SSB radio-for that reason. 'C' kits & 'L' kits had a different xtal in 'em, BUT could be interchanged between radios-IF you had enough tuning range in the radio & kits' transformers. but that was a luck of the draw thing. some would & some wouldn't. if i REALLY needed freqs not accessible by the PLL mod to 8719 radios, i used a different radio... |

Thanks Bruce, I got the $35.00 price from a local friend maybe two or three years ago and I thought that was a rather high price for a crystal. |
