So I've been looking around the past couple days and trying to gather information on base towers to replace my push-up that had a run-in with ma-nature. I have found a couple local and may just do that but I am still harboring a couple questions. I want it 36 feet off of the ground (approx) It will be holding an Imax2000 and later down the road, hopefully, a couple small 2M/6M type antennas, maybe even a scanner antenna. It will probably never hold a beam; wind loading will be fairly light to say the least. I would like to have something free standing, the guys were driving me nuts (wife more-so) and my attach point in that location (away from the house) is only about 6' off the ground. I have full intention of putting it in a lot of concrete. Another caveat is the fact that I am absolutely terrified of heights and have a fascination with antenna modifications and gizmos, I CAN do work up there but I don't WANT to. This led me to start looking into tilt over type towers. Does anyone around here use tilt-overs? Have you had good luck? Where did you find the tilt device? Is a specific tilt type tower or a kit that is added to a conventional tower. Has anyone built one? E-Pay has plans, there is a cat on the internet selling plans too. How much were the materials if you did build? Price IS an object in this endeavor, but, so is safety. I can have 40' of tower now for simply picking it up and supplying the former owner with a large quantity of his preferred beverage, it's even on the ground, broken down. I have a clean slate, and an Imax in the garage I am open for suggestions, I am in central Illinois, our weather ain't pretty but it's a far cry from getting hurricanes and the high desert winds. The last rig met fate with a tornado, I think almost ANY rig will meet fate with a direct hit such as this. Fire away, I'm all ears! Thanks!!! Chad |

Chad, I e-mailed you Pics of my Homemade- Hinge Plate for tower base. I purchased a Rohn Tilt Plate, but, was very dissappointed in it's quality. So, we made one out of 1/2" steel plating. This is just my opinion: But, i believe there is no such thing as a Free-Standing Tower. I think they should all be guyed for safety. |

Chad, I'm not scared of heights but like you I really hate climbing towers, I have a tilt over here in Hurricane Ally Florida. You can take a look at it in the members picture area if you like. Other then searching on the internet for one you might try some of the Hamfest in your area or if you can Dayton Ohio is going to have a big one in May and I know you will find the tower you like/want there. Just trying to help ya out here. As far as pricing goes I couldn't tell ya for a used tower. Good luck in your search and getting back on the air soon.
