I just bought a Palomar 300 elite for $75 at this truck stop in Minooka, IL and I just read that I can't use a 2 pill amp with this S-3! (yes I made the driver prove it worked before I bought it, he had a workman SWR meter and it swings 250+ AM!) Anyways... I just also scored a uniden Grant XL off eBay for $80, should I use the grant with the Palomar?? One driver who seemed to know what he was talking about on the CB said I could use it just turn the power to almost all the way down and turn top gun off, is this BS? Also did I get a good deal on the palomar and Grant? Opinions please, thanks!! |

The S3 is too much radio for that amp, yes you could turn the dead key down to about 2 watts, turn the top gun off and back off the mic gain until your pep watts are around 12-15. Personally I would use the grant xl with the palomar. Copper Has a Blackcat 300, which I am pretty sure is the same thing, for $79.99 + shipping. (actually it is listed as a blackcat 300 and the pic is a palomar 300) As for the XL, I don't know alot about them, but if it was a clean radio I would say you did OK. |

So the magnum could blow the palomar? Is it also possible that the amp could damage the wiring or computer in my truck? I'm thinking about buying a fatboy 500 but I dont want to damage my brand new semi truck. |

topgun off, rf power turned WAY down & mic gain turned WAY down, (for 3 watts dead key, 10-15 swing), you can probably get a 2 pill amp to work....but then you're defeating the purpose of the radio anyway. 4 x 2879 amp is good for the S3. some of the NEW big trucks have computers that do NOT take well to having high amounts of RF forced through 'em. some show no ill affects. know of a GMC general that IMMEDIATELY stopped upon 1 key from a 2 x 8 messenger that was in an earlier version of the same truck. warranty was invalidated. can't say for sure what you may or may not have trouble with...some of the guys here may be able to give you an idea of what works with what they drive. |
