Received this radio on trade. Traded my RCI 2950DX for this radio and 2 sets of beams. Flat Maco 4 elemets and a Maco Comet. Sounds like a good trade well I had this radio about 2 months I tried to talk ssb skip no one would come back. Heard some locals and tried them one came back and siad I sounded like I was over driving and off frequency. Is there any way I can tune usb and lsb on this radio myself or is it best to take it to a Tech. for this. Have not been in this location long and I dont "trust" anyone I haven't been to before. They may try to over charge me. Thanks for any help DoughboyX |

how does it sound on AM XMIT & RCV? how does it RECEIVE on SSB? are the stations relatively close to 'center slot', or do you need to crank the fine tune around to fine 'em? does it have a power mic, or stock mic on it? forget about modulation % for the moment-is the mic gain on the radio backed way down? does it clean up with it backed way down? check for overcranked ALC, SSB power, removed limiter transistors, resistors, etc. |

The ALC probably needs to be properly adjusted. Most folks just turn it up to the wattage level they want without regard for the actual signal quality. To properly adjust the ALC you need an oscilloscope and a two tone audio generator. That's the only way you can see the wave form and know that you aren't flat topping. Listening to the signal isn't good enough because you cannot hear small amounts of clipping. It's the same as splatter on AM. Folks say that they hate how signals sound when they're overmodulated, but by the time you can actually hear the distortion, you've been overmodulating a lot. If you can't find someone with an oscilloscope you could try to get close with the help of a friend listening to your signal. Just back it down a little at a time until your friend tells you that you sound good on frequency. Then have him go to an adjacent frequency and/or the opposite sideband. If you're on 38LSB then have him move to 38USB or 37USB. Have him listen for you again, and back down the ALC until you stop splattering onto those frequencies. During this whole process your friend should have less than an S5 signal from you. If it's higher than that he should cut back his RF gain until it's an S5 or less. This will prevent strong signal overload from sounding like splatter. Putting the radio on frequency is more complicated and I don't think you should do that yourself unless you're got another radio to use if you mess something up or you are very familiar with alignment procedures. |

Pat, The receive is go on SSB and AM too. When fine tuning it isn't straight up and down, it's off to the right towards the R on clarifieR. But when I TX on SSB is when I have the problem. And yes there is a power mic, even when I turn the power mic or the mic gain down,no change in how it sounds. And love the radio it has awesome receive on AM and SSB. DoughoyX |

Hollow, It looks like I will need to take it to someone who knows something about the inside of this radio. If it was labeled inside I would be able to do it myself, but having a hard time finding what needs adjusting. I have looked inside but I don't want to make it worst than it already is. Thanks DoughboyX |
