--Hi, all. I am looking to unlock the clarifier on my General Sherman (the radio is a clone of the old style Cobra 148 and the Texas Ranger TR-296). I was told to get something called a Super-slide Diode, or something like that. A google search found nothing for me. Does anyone know where I can find one, or something similar? If possible, I would like to "slide" 5 to 10kc in each direction (give or take, haha). Thanks for your help.

--By the way, is there a good, reliable set of instructions to unlock the clarifier? I see them on the internet, but have no idea which is the best one (or if it works good, etc. Thanks again.

the best clarifier mod is the one that uses the least ammount of component changes.
use the most basic one you find.
without the super slide diode, (varactor) my clarifier in my 2000gtl slid just over 11khz, thats just with the basic clarifier mod.
try just googling "148gtl clarifier mods"
should return at least 5 different sites.
you can tell the mod that works because it will be repeated over and over. (same mod on different sites)

in case you need it, use an NTE 614.
try an NTE 612 first, and if its not enough slide, try the 614.
the parts are cheap and readily available.
hope this helps,
matt

did you jump D51, mayor? that should give you at least 5kc one way, & at least 10 the other. that way you can cover 'A' channels, as well as 'Ø' freqs.

1 Cut R44
2 Cut D52
3 Solder a jumper wire across R 174 (or remove it and put a jumper in its place)
4 Remove red wire that comes from the Fine tune pot from the board and hook it to the + side of C84
5 Change R175 to a 1KOhm

is the basic clarifier mod, that'll get you a total of 4-5kc slide, not enough for 'A' or 'Ø' freqs as is. you could jump d51, or do the 10k up and/or down switch mod as well, for 'A', but still probably won't hit 'Ø'
