I am going to buy a new amp. Texas Star 667 Dave made x-force fatboy or skywalker.. All will have the same pill figure in them. Which one is the best and will last the longest? |

texas stars are wonderful amplifiers, I have a texas star modulator driving a xfore 400hd, so essentially I have a 5 transistor amp, whish is what the 667 is. The only disadvantage to a texas star is that they can;t take much drive. They can take like 16 watts peak but not more than that. A lot of these custom amplifiers like dave made xforce and so on can take a little more drive |

all are good choices...and designed for different uses. the dx667v is a good all purpose AM/SSB 1 x 4 amp, capable of 150 dead key & 500 swing, with 3/18 PEP input. the davemade m400 & xforce x400 are exactly the same 1 x 4 capable of 200+ dead key, 800 PEP, with 3 key/30 PEP input. ON AM! for SSB, the magnaforce mf600 is a straight 4 pill that will handle 15 key /150PEP input for 200/800 out. OR- you could ask davemade or xforce to BIAS the m400 or x400 for SSB the fatboy 1 x 4 is also the same as the m & X 400's, same in, same out. cheapest of them ALL (including TS), & maybe ever so slightly of lesser build quality. MAYBE. skywalker as well is the same as the other 3. not readily available here, so problems are more difficult to tackle. dx667v service is through galaxy, the others directly through their respective builder. though i use davemade, joe has been known to be difficult to deal with & his prices are 2nd to texas star, but the most proven custom box available. xforce guys have been known to be the easiest to work with, especially for those requiring mods, or lots of technical advice. fatboy has been ok, though i've never requested an SSB-bias mod from charger. have never dealt with skywalker directly, only 2nd hand. |

What radio will you be using? The Texas Star is not in the same league as the customs. Much more wattage from the customs and power reqiurement. Something like a Grant XL or 148 for the 667, no dual finals needed. A single final radio can work the customs but a dual final radio is more suitable for its input needed to perform. |

For a General Lee I would avoid the 667, it has to much power! Now a General Lee and a DX500 will be a match made in heaven! Messenger 250 is about a 150-200 watt amp right? Probably could drive a 2879 X 8 pill custom box. The Lee has PLENTY of drive for any straight 4 pill box! When driving amps with amps ya gotta be careful man. I once heard a guy driving a DX250 into a DX400 and just like that I only heard him once! Pat can describe the auroma of 10 ohm smoke! 73 |
