I am just wondering if anyone knows the best way to hook up one of these. I wired mine straight to the positive and negative that is in my truck. I've heard that maybe I should go staight to the battery with the positive but, what about the ground. My mic is shocking the *&%$ out of my lips when I key down. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am running the radio in a freightliner carhauler so SWR is really tricky to be down. Anybody know what the best antenna for a application like this might be? I'm running a 5ft wilson top loaded. |

Ground the radio from one of the case screws, make sure you have a real ground. Make sure your antenna is grounded. Make sure where ever you have the negative lead for your radio going that it is grounded. I ran my ground back to the battery. When I was getting mic bite, my antenna ground on my Jeep had nearly broke off because of the tailgate opening and closing. When I did my install I grounded my frame, engine, battery in several places and made sure they were interconnected. I also ran a much larger wire from my alternator to the battery and also to the fuse panel. Pretty much everything is grounded multiple times in different locations. It may take a little work and quite a few feet of wire to get it done but it's worth it in the long run, especially if you don't want to get bit anymore. |

Thanks Wildrat I'll try that out. I always thought that your ground should be as short as possible though. I'm sure it probably doesn't matter as long as it's a good ground. I'm not so much worried about the bite from the mic. I'm more worried that the shock will some how mess up my new radio. Thanks again for the help. |

Yes Bluegrasfish run both to the battery and never hurts to ground the radio chassis to the chassis or frame work in the dash. Also be sure the antenna is mounted well. By this I mean a good connection between the mount and the vehicle metal. If your cb antenna is near another antenna you could be sending RF down its feedline causing the mic to give you that rf burn. I had the same problem with a scanner antenna. The bite does not bug you? Man it did me and the mic almost got pitched out the window! I am a wimp when it comes to pain especially when its heat!73 |

hey hotwire, be careful when you're throwong those mics out the window! they have a tendancy to spring back and bust you in the grill. matt |

Matt! I just roll the window up really quick and hope the mic snags on something while I drag it down the road! Hey you have heard of the Gear Keeper right? Ever noticed on the package it says grab the mic talk and then just let go? WELL I did that one time and man I almost broke out my windshield because the tension in the thing is so strong! Possible to knock a tooth loose. Just a note to all forum members: Hotwire is not as ridiculous as he appears to be on the Copper forum. He is really somewhat highly intelligent but silly with a huge sense of humor. He does silly and ridiculous things at least once (so others don't have to) just to test and be sure if whatever silly and ridiculous action he is doing is a good or a bad ideal! 73 |

man hotwire, i need a disclaimer like that! mind if i borrow yours? maybe we could all tape ourselves and put out a video of "CB BLUNDERS"! i would include the time that i first poked around inside a tube radio, ( a swan that i got at a swap meet when i was a teenager) and shocked myself with what i later measured to be about 400 volts. luckily it was very low amperage! i fell backwards off of the stool i was sitting on, and the noise sent the whole family running upstairs to find me bug eyed and very surprised! after that i learned to use a chopstick. (still cant hold 'em right) take it easy, matt |
